Less abrasive and experimental than much of the work that would follow it, this album is nonetheless Autechre's most solid benchmark, representing both the grounding point and jumping off point for their later excursions. Rather than wowing us with bleeps and muscular electro, the duo here seduce us with the delicate ebb and flow of elegant electronica, conjuring up a crepuscular moodscape underpinned by gently bubbling electro. Opening with the moody, textured Kalpol Intro, the album fluidly merges together to create an unbroken, mellifluous soundtrack, warming the soul whilst simultaneously stimulating the synapses. Each track offers something unique, yet fits smoothly into the overall jigsaw.
