There are countless B.B. King collections out there, but this is one of the few that really captures the development of his groundbreaking style in the '50s. There are countless B.B. King collections out there, but this is one of the few that really captures the development of his groundbreaking style in the '50s. Why these essential masters from the R.P.M., Modern, and Kent imprints had never been released before on CD is truly a mystery. But why complain now? Here for your pleasure are early (and some original) versions of B.B. signature songs like "Everyday I Have the Blues," "Sweet Little Angel," and "Three O'Clock Blues." On each track, you can hear King crying the blues and executing T-Bone Walker-style solos with the energy and confidence of a young man. The sting of his guitar "Lucille" is made even more powerful due to the early stereophonic sound, and his studio bands pack a primitive wallop as well. --Ken Hohman
If the four-CD King of the Blues box is too big a bite out of your budget, this is a good primer of early B.B. King gems. "You Upset Me Baby," "Sweet Sixteen," "Sweet Little Angel," and "Everyday I Have the Blues" are among his career-founding hits. There's even his rare take on the Elmore James classic "Dust My Broom," reinterpreted sans James's trademark slide guitar licks. The youthful exuberance of King's singing is a joy to hear on all of these 20 tracks. And the influence of T-Bone Walker and swinging jump blues is at its most naked on these sides from the R.P.M., Kent, and Crown labels. --Ted Drozdowski
