The series is not yet dead

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 3 March 2022 11:59

Judging from my other reviews, you would not think that horror films would be my thing, especially very gory ones. Actually aim to have a diverse taste in film, so seeing films from all decades and genres with no bias intended. Plus have seen my fair share of horror franchises where at least one film has been good.

Found myself surprisingly enjoying 'Wrong Turn' when slowly working my way through the films. The second film, and first sequel, 'Wrong Turn 2: Dead End' is not quite as good but is easily one of the better sequels and films in the series and perhaps the only one of the sequels to be nearly equal to the first. 'Wrong Turn 2: Dead End' is bloodier and gorier than 'Wrong Turn', with the in-jokes, one-liners and put-downs the dialogue is wittier and less cheesy than that in 'Wrong Turn' and it is just as fun. The ending also works better here, it is contrived somewhat but at least there is much more of a sense of a film-knowing-how-to-end-it ending.

At the same time, 'Wrong Turn 2: Dead End' does lack the tension-building, suspenseful claustrophobia and mystery of the first film and it is let down by some of the first half being dull and dumb with some of the dialogue being too self-conscious. The story is as simplistic and derivative and the characters as thinly sketched as before.

Things pick up significantly in the second half, where things become more thrilling, inventive, fun and skin-crawling. Visually, it is imaginatively and slickly shot if not quite as atmospheric as the first film due to times of being too clean. The setting is wonderfully mysterious and creepy and the effects and make-up are as appropriately horrifying as one would expect. The music has some genuine eeriness and Joe Lynch directs very competently with little time wasted after a slightly too overlong beginning.

Despite the lack of development for the characters, the acting is not bad at all. Henry Rollins and Erica Leerhsen are especially well-cast and are just as ballsy as the three leads in the first film.

Overall, decently solid and shows that the 'Wrong Turn' series is not yet dead. A dead end this is not. 6/10 Bethany Cox

WOW This was on T.v.?

Posted : 13 years, 5 months ago on 7 November 2010 05:54

I was flipping through stations on the good ol' t.v. and stumbled upon this "lovely film" on sci-fi. It caught my eye, due to the extreme gore. My jaw dropped with puzzlement at this horror. I'm still trying to figure out how this was on t.v...very graphic. It may seem like I'm exaggerating, but I was caught off guard.

--Henry Rollins is one guy you don't want to run into..especially if you are a cannibalistic hillbilly. The story is a sequel, that involves zany cannibals. They're also hillbillies that reminisce Deliverance and gets the creep factor seeping in to your feared skull. Teens.. of course, travel into these woods for adventure and promiscuity with no care about the sketchyness that surrounds their fate.

--There are so many moments that made me queezy, I'll admit I'm not a gore fan, it's rather sickening and..I'm not sick in the head..Anyways some scenes with Rollins are really "bad A$$", when dealing with these twisted deformed beings. I couldn't look away because I wanted to know how it would end, even though it's very gruesome and messed up.

Dislikes: The gore...waay too much for television that can be viewed by any kid looking for something to watch. It was on at 4 p.m.!! HAHa it's odd and amuses me.

Rating: 6.1/10

Better Than The First?

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 8 December 2009 11:23

I know what everyone is thinking, and I was thinking the exact same thing before I watched this movie. I too indeed thought it was going to be another chees-fest, low budget sequel, with absolutely nothing going for it. Truth be told folks, it's exactly the opposite of that, and shockingly good!.

The plot is somehow unique, with some originality mixed in, and not as many stupid cliches. Personally I felt the first film lacked the fast-paced adrenaline rush that Dead End has. I wasn't really engaged in the plot of the original, nor was I entertained as much I would have hoped. The two films are indeed completely different in terms of, well everything (except the cannibals of course). Opposed to a few friends traveling into deadly-cannibalistic territory, Wrong Turn 2 has several characters more, competing in some sort of reality show type-thing, pitting all of them up against quite a few deformed man eating freaks. It's the same old in terms of what you would expect from a wrong turn movie, but better.

If this would have had a chance in theaters, I can confidently say that it would have done pretty decently. As almost all direct-to-dvd films are low budget looking, and just plain bad, filled with cheesy dialogue and ridiculous acting, I am happy to finally see some signs of life in that particular department. While Wrong Turn 2 isn't perfect, it still sets the bar in the trilogy. Check it out, you just might have some fun!

Better than the first? heck yeah!

7.2/10
