" Notes: To be honest, I donât think it is really a great movie. Indeed, there was nothing visually really impressive about it, none of the characters involved were really interesting (except for Efrem and Old Ned) and the story was pretty much a random mess. And yet, the historical value of this movie is huge since it is considered as the earliest known surviving film directed by an African-American. As a result, it was quite intriguing to see such an old movie finally from a black perspectiv"

“I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but since it kept hearing some pretty good things about it (it is included in the â1001 Movies You Must See Before You Dieâ list among other things), I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, I donât think it is really a great movie. Indeed, there was nothing visually really impressive about it, none of the characters involved were really interesting (except for Efrem and Old Ned) and the story was pretty much a random mess. As a result, it was quite intriguing to see such an old movie finally from a black perspective, focusing on black characters and directed by a black man,” read more
"You know, it's very hard to wish for specificity in a film made in 1920, and that is the earliest surviving film directed by an African American. I would love to see more detail on what makes some of these characters tick â particularly what drives the good rich white lady disagree with the racist rich white lady â and without that level of specificity existing, it's occasionally hard to see Within Our Gates as anything other than a naively hopeful fable on how the world will fix itself and "

" Date: 8/29/2019 Viewed: Film Class First viewing Note: I saw this movie for the first time today in my film class and I enjoy it. The movie had a good cast of characters that you care about and the movie had nice pacing. The movie didn't go on forever and not a single moment was boring. I like how the movie shows on what life was like for Black Americans during the early twentieth century. I also like the message behind this movie to encourage Black Americans to earn self-respect and become "
