An average movie

Posted : 4 years, 1 month ago on 15 March 2020 02:35

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since it was available on Netlix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I have to admit that I was actually rather positively surprised by the damned thing. Indeed, I usually have a hard time to care about such satires. Basiscally, in my opinion, most of them are just too damned moronic but I have to admit that this one was actually not bad at all after all. Above all, the makers (Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone) really nailed the tone of such numerous documentaries dealing with major pop-stars which keeps popping up recently. For example, not so long ago, I watched, also on Neftlix, 'Miss Americana' and, even though it was very well received, I thought it was still fairly pretentious which is always the case with such movies. With this flick, they managed to display how such documentaries try too hard to be deep and meaninful but, eventually, they all end up being rather shallow after all. Furthermore, even if it was expected, it was also pretty neat to see all these actors, singers and celebrities showing up for a cameo. However, even though this movie worked as satire, it was parodying a rather weak genre and, even if it was a decent attempt, I still think it remains a futile exercise. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really ground-breaking, against my expectations, it turned out to be a decent watch after all and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.ย

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 28 September 2016 08:42

It's from the incredibly funny people of The Lonely Island group. I kind of missed out on it while it was in theaters sadly. At first I had thought it was some dumb new documentary from Justin Bieber or something until I actually watched the trailer. That was before the theaters of course. All three of them wrote this one. The only other film the wrote together was Extreme Movie (which in my opinion is pretty hilarious). Jorma Taccone also wrote and directed the MacGruber movie. Akiva directed Hot Rod as well as The Watch. Anyways the cast is pretty cool (besides Maya Rudolph whom I despise) and it has some great cameos.

This reminded me of quite of shows from MTV. The I Love the 80s, TMZ of course, among other stuff. Some of the music is definitely offensive, but that is part of the joke. The jokes and music were pretty funny though. They even made the gross jokes make sense for the situations. It had a few misses with it's jokes, but really nothing that made it lame. The scene with the wolves was probably one of my favorites. The style of the movie is pretty different and definitely makes it stand out. It feels a lot like at times that it is a parody of Justin Bieber. Allegedly according to the filmmakers it wasn't intentional. I though the whole idea was pretty funny and well executed. There was an extra scene during the credits that was kind of amusing.

The characters are great and well acted. Everyone added their own special quality to the whole mix. Owen was probably the most likable of the main characters. I always enjoy the underdog characters. The cameos were incredible and it looked as if they really had fun. Some of them poked fun at themselves which was awesome to see. Who would have known that some of them were even good at comedic timing. I am curious to know if the stuff at the awards ceremonies were more unlisted cameos or if it was footage used from something else. Either way it was cool to see who all showed up in this.

For me these kinds of movies are a nice getaway from the real world. I always enjoy the stuff from Lonely Island no matter how absurd it gets at times. The parody atmosphere of this was great with many jokes to look out for. The characters were great and the cameos made for some hilarious moments. The writing was excellent. I really couldn't expect anything less than fun from these guys. If you are looking for something new and funny to watch I say give it a shot. Unless of course you are easily offended.
