Uncle Buck review

Posted : 2 years ago on 1 April 2022 11:37

There are some very negative critical reviews on this movie, which I think personally is unjustified. This film is very funny indeed, especially when the bowling ball falls on Buck's head. John Candy gives possibly his best performance here as Buck Russell. John Candy was one talented actor, evident in Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Cool Runnings, and I think comedy lost a truly great actor when he died, and I don't think he ever got the respect he so rightly deserved. This film is very funny indeed, sometimes the jokes are a little over-familiar, and the sentimentality gets in the way at times. Out of the child stars, who were all excellent, Macaulay Culkin of Home Alone fame is a standout. Cute and self-assured suits Culkin like a glove. There was great chemistry between the stars, and in conclusion, see this gem, of which I will award an 8/10 Bethany Cox.

An average movie

By now, I have seen most of the movies directed by John Hughes (I’m still missing ‘Sixteen Candles’ and ‘She's Having a Baby’) but except for ‘The Breakfast Club’ which really deserves its stellar reputation, I can’t say I was really impressed by his work and this movie was not an exception. Indeed, I didn't think it was that great. I mean, sure, it was not bad either but that's about it. I guess I'm not a big fan of neither John Hughes or John Candy so I may miss the great qualities of this feature. At the time, after pretty much ruling the 80’s with his teenage comedies, John Hughes was starting to losing his touch and he would direct only one other feature (the even more underwhelming ‘Curly Sue’). Eventually, this movie would be mostly remembered as the introduction of the famous Macauley Culkin to the mainstream audience. Eventually, John Hugues must have been impressed somehow by the little fellow and he would cast him a year later for ‘Home Alone’ which would turn out to be a huge box-office success. To conclude, even though I wasn’t really blown away by this flick, I have to admit that it was still a decent comedy and it is definitely worth a look though, especially if you like such comedies from the 80's.

This is a good comedy with a dark twist to it, like a lot of John Hughes movies. The up side is that it's funny and really quotable...

"Hi, I'm Buck Melanoma, Moley Russell's wart..."

It's John Candy in one of his funnier roles. Check it out, watch it, then watch it again.
