Nymphomaniac: Vol. I review

Posted : 2 years, 4 months ago on 11 December 2021 01:28

A good movie

First of all, I have to point out that, even though I managed to find a UK double DVD with the director's cut for a decent prize, to my disappointment,  for some reasons, they didn’t provide any subtitles. I mean, I'm completely fluent  in English  (I even have  a university master degree in English) but it is still not my mother tongue so I'm afraid I did miss some bits here and there. Obviously, you might argue that this movie was probably not about the dialogues but you would be wrong. Indeed, maybe 1 third was about her actions and the rest was all about her narration  and her fascinating conversation with Stellan Skarsgård. Of course, as usual with this director, the whole thing was really dark and gloomy but I was this time quite able to connect with this material, even if it was indeed pretty messed-up. At least, you have  to give the guy some credit as who else would dare or even be allowed to make something so transgressive? To conclude, it was obviously another really difficult movie from the Danish master but there was definitely something quite fascinating about the whole thing and I guess it is worth a look but you should be fully aware of its content before checking it out.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. I review

Yes I am watching this two part craziness. I decided to go with the director's cuts. So I will be taking my time to watch these as it totals out to about 5 hours or more. I mean it has to be better than that pile of crap Fifty Shades of Grey. So it starts off with a couple minutes of annoying black screen. Then it shows several shots of parts of an alley. It was a bit uncomfortable to see Joe as a toddler and young girl discovering herself. Shia LaBeouf has definitely come a long way from the goofy teen of Even Stevens. Yes this is pretty hardcore with its gratuitous sex scenes, but it is actually quite philosophical. A lot of it I'm sure would go over the average watcher's head as they might only be aware of the sexual more apparent sides of the story. I'm not really one with math so whenever they pop some math on the screen I feel lost. The acting here is actually quite good and the characters themselves are interesting enough.

Pros:
-The acting was great
-The women are attractive
-Lots of naughty bits lol
-Philosophical not just sexual
-Good soundtrack
-Some of it kind of seemed a little silly to me like the Chocolate Sweeties scene

Cons:
-A little too much math here
-Not something you can really watch with others unless you are a nymphomaniac of course
-Can't really recommend it to others for the most part

Anyways this was pretty good. Although if someone walks in on you watching during one of the sex scenes they might think you are watching some slightly more romantic porn. Well on to see what's in store for me in part deux.

To take with humour, otherwise would be indigest. For moments, I prefer the austere present tense, with shy Skarsgard, than the dynamic past.

The first phase of transformation of young Joe.

The Danish director Lars Von Trier is one of the rarest among who rapidly changes theme, plot and genre in his each movie. I love his filmography and been watching those for some time now. I am not a great fan of musical themes, but his movie 'Dancer in the Dark' is one of my all time favourites. These all led me here to take a quick glance on his latest two installment movie series.

This movie tells a story of a woman called Joe, who suffers from being a nymphomaniac. Especially this first movie briefs her life as a youngster who seeks a different class of men to fulfill her sexual thirst. This story was told in a series of flashbacks when middle aged Joe recalls her earlier story in the presence of an old man. The stories she told was presented in chapters like a book and each chapter contains different characters in different phases of her life. She spits all her secrets that were preserved so far which stuns the old man.

The secret ingredient to sex... is love.

In between the breaks of the chapters the old man brings up some comparison of book, history and art to her story. I don't know, Von Trier might thought to convince the audience by saying it is not just a fiction, but the reappearance of history in the modern world. Well, he succeeds, but some people won't agree for not shown in a decent manner. I mean everything in the movie was raw. It makes me think the world (filmmaking) is not anymore the same.

The commitment given by the actors were exceptional. The kind of shock that Von Trier gives through this movie will remain with me for a long time. He approached with this to the different class of audience where the majority will remain silent and away from it. This part was so much better as it stands true to its title where part 2 a bit reorders everything and travels in an alternate direction. Especially the end was so sudden and makes us to feel an incomplete. It is better to watch one after another without giving much space and that is how it works most probably.
