"The Island" (2005)

Posted : 10 years, 9 months ago on 18 July 2013 06:52

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The plot follows a man and woman in an underground hive who discover the truth behind their living conditions and escape into the outside world.
Well, among all of Michael Bay's movies, I'd say this one is the most story-driven. โ€ฆBut that's not saying much! It still prioritises action and visceral thrills over the actual plot, and the plot itself gets increasingly predictable anyway.
The idea of containing a civilisation in an enclosed facility and feeding them a false past is nothing really new. Some aspects of this movie's take on that idea were interesting, especially the reason behind it all, but on the whole it just didn't win me over.
Like I said before, the movie clearly cares more about action than the plot, and the action itself is always that over-edited, disorientating Michael Bay action that I hate.
I also hated how, like several other Michael Bay movies, many lines are unnecessarily shouted.
Not to mention, the two leads' attempts to interact with the real world are just painful to watch.
But the movie really lost me quite early on, when our hero gets probes implanted in his eye, which I got the impression would record whatever he saw. And nothing ever comes of them!
To sum up, out of all Michael Bay's movies, this one is probably the least bad. It has a more defined premise than most of his other movies, but it still finds a way to be boring as hell.

My rating: 30%

The Island review

Posted : 12 years ago on 15 April 2012 10:23

The story in near future wher human race becomes scientifically advanced, but morally degraded. A team scientist developed human clones, financed by their rich host to get the replacement parts when neded, however the hosts are not aware of the fact that their clones have been made. Supposed to be dumbed and brain washed clones, things get changed when two of the products got escaped from the production facility.

The Island is Michael Bayโ€™s attempt at intelligent science fiction. One of those rare movies where everything truly comes together into a complete blockbuster package.

A good movie

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Michael Bay. I mean, his movies are usually entertaining but also always disposable trash but, somehow, I always end up watching his flicks because, I have to confess, they are usually fairly watchable. Anyway, tThis movie was actually a flop, at least compared to his other blockbusters but it is, in fact, the best movie he has directed so far. As usual, you have the big special effects and stunts extravaganza but I never minded those and Michael Bay knows how to blow things up, you have to give him that. Above all, what I liked this time, is that the story was rather intriguing. I mean, it is a rather standard plot about cloning, and, honestly, they didn't give much new insights about the subject but it was definitely entertaining and more interesting than you average Bay feature. Of course, the casting of Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson as leads for an action flick was an interesting move, even though Johansson didn't have much to do expect showing off her pretty face. On the other hand, I thought that Ewan McGregor was, as usual, really good and he gave a decent performance. So, even though, Michael Bay wasn't rewarded by the box office, I think it is actually his most interesting and entertaining flick and it is definitely worth a look.

Clones Who Can question and Think

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 6 December 2010 05:52

You wake up every morning, your clothes are clean, your shoes in the same place you left them the night before, and you go to your job. Life is normal, or so you think. The lottery and it's prize, The Island: the perfect utopia for mankind to reproduce after "the contamination". The lottery is believed to be random but Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) ,a clone housed in an underground former military bunker, is beginning to question his environment and everything in it. What Lincoln doesn't know is that he is "spare parts" used for the well being of his "sponsor". This action-Thrill ride from Michael Bay( Bad Boys) questions cloning. Is it right to create life only to kill it for a paying customer? The Island features a great villain (Sean Bean from Goldeneye)and a great supporting cast. Which is made up of Steve Buscemi, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Dijom Hounsou. The acting is superb from Ewan McGregor and supporting cast but Scarlett Johansson like any female in a Michael Bay movie is here mainly to provide some T&A and some company for our main character. Which at times is depressing to see someone who has great talent used for a simple role such as this. However, the Island, is no doubt still an entertaining and great action movie for Sci-Fi fans.

An Average Action Film.

"The Island", was in some ways a disappointment. The action scenes were average, but they were very predictable, and for the most part, not very entertaining. I was expecting a much more exhilarating film, with more genuine scenes, and a few more plot boosts. "The Island", is just your typical action/science fiction film, with a pretty interesting and unique plot. There was one aspect I was fond of however, and that was the comedy. This film was genuinely funny. I also thought they did a good job with the fight sequences, and car chases. So overall, a good solid film.

Great Film

This film was excellent. I loved the plot, "Rich people cloning themselves, for when they get ill or lose a limb they just take it off the clone and discard the rest".
I thought this was a great film, not your typical action film. This film will be hard to compete with.

"I certainly hope i'm not someones clone"

The Island

Another completely predictable movie. Every plot twist I saw coming long before it arrived, so there were no surprises. I did, however, find the movie entertaining, and loved all the action and destruction. I just sat back and watched this movie, and while not completely blown away, I definitely enjoyed it...though it seems more like a "watch once" kind of movie to me.

Amazing Sci-Fi Movie

Definetly the best Sci-Fi movie I have seen in a long time, Its an all-star cast, and although this movie is full of action and suspence it has many funny lines.
You really, really should see this movie.

Not What I Expected

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 11 October 2006 11:33

I sort of thought this was going to be a suspense movie with the plot unfortunately revealed in the trailer. It actually is an "on-the-run" action movie. Better than I expected, but one stunt (you'll know it when you see it) is ridiculous.
