Poor Dr. Seuss must be rolling in his grave!

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 13 December 2022 10:38

Dr. Seuss's stories are funny and charming, and some of them like How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Horton Hears a Who have been made into surprisingly good films.(Jim Carrey was brilliant as the Grinch but the animated short is a wonderful timeless classic) However, Cat in the Hat is just a joke of a film. I saw it with four of my friends at the cinema for my 12th birthday 5 or 6 years ago, and all of us hated it.

The main problem is the casting of Mike Myers, or miscasting more like. He was good as Austin Powers and Shrek, but his performance as the Cat was beyond cringe worthy. There were times when he had a preposterous Scottish accent that didn't suit him at all(it sounded nothing like the voice he used on Shrek), and all the Cat had to do was make terrible fart jokes, and sing songs with lyrics that were impossible to decipher.

The script was terrible, full of fart jokes and clichéd one liners. Kids are most unlikely to laugh at the overused bathroom humour, they will a find it unfunny, or b find it offensive. None of the 5 of us laughed once in this movie, other than when the Cat was singing.

The film does have two redeeming qualities. One is some nice scenery in the latter half of the film. The other is Dakota Fanning, who was the only actress in the film who made some effort to make her character true to the story. Kelly Preston was okay, and Alec Baldwin is very good in films like the Shadow and Hunt For Red October, but in films like this and Thomas and the Magic Railroad, he is completely wasted as the villain.

All in all, a lifeless and unfunny film. It isn't quite as abysmal as Home Alone 4, but it is really awful. I am sorry if I have offended anyone, I genuinely hate criticising movies, but Cat in the Hat really did take the biscuit. 1/10 for the scenery and Fanning. Bethany Cox

To say this was a HORRIBLE Movie, is actually being nice and not worth watching even once!! This MIGHT HAVE ended Mike Myers acting career.

The Cat in the Hat review

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 13 May 2015 05:24

Written in rhyme, the book tells a stutter about 2 kids left alone at home. They had an unexpected visitor, who created havoc. They should not have let the Cat in the Hat enter. The Cat proceeded into every room and caused mayhem, furniture was overturned, ornaments were broken. The kids watched in horror as this tornado of activity wreaked mayhem on their tidy house. They were worried about the adults return and they watched helplessly as their world was turned upside down. Then, horror, the adults are coming! They'll be here soon, what'll they do? They need to tidy!
But, the cat continues to damage the house contents. When he becomes aware of the imminent arrival of the parents, he magically goes into a whirlwind of activity, repairing all damage and making everything good again. Just in time!
All of this happens in rhyme. Its great for young kids, or adults reading it out loud. Fun! Fun!
I really enjoyed it! I know my kids did too!

The Cat in the Hat review

I loved this when I read it to my kids, when they were little. They loved it and it was a nightly ritual to act out the voices.

I laughed once! That's it.

You may have noticed, I give a lot of kid movies 2/10, however 'The Cat In The Hat' should really not be a kid's movie, if you read my review, you will know what I'm talking about

I watched 'The Cat In The Hat' to see if it was that bad, also I was bored, at least I don’t have to waste my time watching it when there are tons of better things to do (I’d played on the Wii and the internet connection sucked) but I had low expectations on this film because everyone was saying horrible things about it, all the haters are absolutely right, the cat is creepy, ugly and unfunny, Thing 1 and Thing 2 are creepy too (in cartoons, they would look like a cartoon but here they look scary), this not fun at all trash may entertain the same audience as G-Force (very, very young children) but not suitable (at least G-Force is suitable for very, very young children)

I laughed once! That's all! Rude, crude humor unsuitable for the target audience, racist and sexual jokes and a most inappropriate scene where the Cat is pulled into the couch and you can see his bum (who the hell thought of putting these filthy, inappropriate, unfunny jokes in a kid’s movie

Also there is a scene where one of the Things lets the dog out the window and they have to chase it, they interrupt a party just as everyone comes outside to hit the pinata, the Cat then replaces the pinata with himself and gets hit in the privates, they then show you the Cat on a swing in a dress in the snow? What the hell? Just what does this movie have to do with Dr. Seuss's book? Barely any rhyming, mature content, an evil unemployed neighbor!

When the dog runs off, Cat, Conrad and Sally get chased by Larry who wants to get the dog back before they can, after he hears about it at his house, they return home to discover the house has turned into a ride thanks to the crate, the Cat references Universal Studios when they're on the ride and winks at the screen! What the hell was that?

I just wish at the party, the Cat had really been hung and suffocated and when the kids send him away because he destroyed their house, I just wish it happened at the beginning, but oh no, he comes back to clean his mess and Larry is dumped when Joan sees the clean house

In my opinion, 'The Cat In The Hat' should not be watched by anyone whose parents won’t let them watch a 12 rated movie (I bet if the BBFC had made the mistake of rating it U, the employee that rated it would’ve been fired)

It was not worth casting Alec Baldwin as he is not only obnoxious like the rest of the cast but since when does the family's neighbor have a role in the book? Also his character Larry wants to send Conrad to military school!

The acting is completely obnoxious but Mike Myers gives the worst performance for sure as the role of the creepy, annoying cat, this crap is unfunny, bland, forgettable and FOR THE LAST TIME is inappropriate for the target audience and is not worth a look at all even if you’re a die-hard fan of Dr. Seuss’s novel

P.S. By the way, did I forget to mention that they were planning a SEQUEL?! Based on 'The Cat In The Hat Comes Back'

Well due to it being so bad, Dr. Seuss's widow allowed no more live action adaptations of Dr. Seuss's work and the sequel was cancelled. Thank god for that!

An average movie

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 3 July 2012 08:24

I'm not sure what to say about this movie. Indeed, I heard only terrible things about it so I really had the lowest expectations before watching it. But I thought I could give it a try with my step-son who was much younger back then. Eventually, I didn't think it was that bad actually. First of all, I have to say I'm not really familiar with Dr Seuss books. I mean, I have seen the movies but I know nothing about the books so everytime I watched one of those flicks I don't have any preconceived ideas about what they should do or not. So, I thought the movie looked good and there was a pretty good cast (Mike Myers, Alec Baldwin, Kelly Preston, Dakota Fanning, Spencer Breslin) so I can't say it was the worst movie I have ever seen. Of course, the fact that I don't think it was that bad doesn't mean that it was actually any good. Indeed, I thought the whole thing was still pretty boring (I'm not the targeted audience so that's not a real shock) but the cat was really obnoxious pretty quickly. To conclude, I din't really enjoy it, I think it is a pretty average familly feature and it is not really worth a look but I don't really see why everybody hate it so much. Eventually, you should watch it at your own risk...

The Cat in the Hat review

Horrible, horrible movie. First of all, Michael Myers(I actually like his acting for the most part) should be ashamed of himself for even THINKING about doing this film. It's creepy, the humor is horrible and not intended for a young audience, it's terribly all around.

THE CAT IN THE HAT FLOP

Posted : 15 years, 8 months ago on 27 August 2008 01:30

This movie, aside its "FAMILY" name, there is nothing about this movie that is family orientated. I hated it. I thought that if it wasnt for the actors in the movie, and if this was a low budget movie, that there wouldnt be as much hype about it. The concepts in this movie, were nothing short of less then what CHILDREN should be subjected to. The sexual and over the top antics, are just not suited for the viewing eyes of children...
Overall, a total shit movie...

They call this a KIDS movie???

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 5 September 2007 02:32

Jesus freakin' christ, i had to shut off this garbage shortly after the 'cat' showed up. Rude crude humor, and sexual jokes about getting an 'erection' while looking at a fold out centerfold spread of the kids' mother? Or he pretends he's a plumber, bends over, and you can see his ass crack? Who's the sick F**K (pardon my language) who thought these would be appropriate joke to do in a kids/family movie??

Absolute filth and garbage, and they completely raped the great Cat in Hat franchise that my child loves. Unless you like to hurt your child's mental development, or are retarded yourself, avoid this mess.
