A classic

Even though I'm a huge fan of Charlie Chaplin (I basically grew up with the guy), I must confess, I have always been kind of oblivious about Buster Keaton. Indeed, so far I only saw 'The General' which didn't really blow me away (but I definitely need to re-watch it though). Anyway, this was my second movie starring Keaton and I really enjoyed it. Basically, the plot was some kind of typical 'Rome... read more

No image greater summarizes the artistry of Buster Keaton than his placid, immobile face and body language as the front of a house falls on top of him. The Great Stone Face was as much a character as Chaplin’ Little Tramp, but while the Tramp demanded a lovability and graceful physicality, Keaton’s character was a harder, colder individual. Possessing a greater sense of daring, adventure, and ... read more

When it comes to comedy, have a particular appreciation for the witty and sophisticated kinds, of which there are many classic examples out there. The same can be said for comedies that take a broad approach without being too juvenile or crass, am far less keen on those kinds of comedies and too many of them today overdo to puerile effect. Steamboat Bill is excited that his son (Steamboat Bill Jr.) is coming to visit him. When he does, he tries to turn him into a proper person for working on the boats, while his son resists. Meanwhile, Kitty, a girl that he knows from school in Boston, spots him and introduces him to her father, a rival of Steamboat Bill. He tries to be alone with her, but gets caught several times, and is given a ticket back to Boston. Steamboat Bill gets arrested for unruly conduct (on a condemnation notice of his boat) and it's up to Bill Jr. to rescue his dad - in the middle of a cyclone storm

Certainly is a hurricane of laughs

“When it comes to comedy, have a particular appreciation for the witty and sophisticated kinds, of which there are many classic examples out there. The same can be said for comedies that take a broad approach without being too juvenile or crass, am far less keen on those kinds of comedies and too many of them today overdo to puerile effect. There are many instances of silent films/comedies, seen with Charlie Chaplin, prime Laurel and Hardy and with Buster Keaton.

Have always considered Keaton one of the greats, as do a great many. It is a shame that he didn't transition as smoothly into the sound era from the silent as Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy, because in his prime (the 1920s) he was every bit as great, as funny and as likeable. His daring physical comedy and stoic deadpan exp” read more

Indeed, so far I only saw 'The General' which didn't really blow me away. Anyway, this was my second movie starring Keaton and I really enjoyed it though. TCM’s Essentials Vol 2: Another 52 Must See Movies (52 movies items)

"“This film is now considered one of Buster Keaton’s masterpieces, but in 1928 it was the latest Keaton film very poorly at the box office – which was especially hard on him because at that time, Buster was financing his films with his own money…. After this he signed a contract with MGM, he basically got lost in the factory mentality of the studio system…and soon realized he made the worst mistake of his life. He never again enjoyed genuine creative freedom…. But this film was made"
