Starship Troopers (1997) review

Posted : 5 years, 5 months ago on 7 November 2018 06:28

Entretenida sátira que nadie supo apreciar debidamente porque todos son unos ignorantes que creyeron que la obra aprobaba la conducta de la armada.
Incluso en la "Era de los Remake", todavía a nadie se le ocurrió revivir esta franquicia.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember seeing the trailer for this movie in the theater, and me and my buddies saying we may have too go see that. Then I completely forgot about it. Then it was one of the 1st DVDs I bought when I bought my 1st DVD player, and instantly fell in love with this movie. Definately one too see, own, and watch over and over again.

Starship Troopers (1997) review

Still a great film that looks incredible on Blu-Ray. Serious credit to the design and VFX people that this still looks amazing 14 years later, when so many movies from the same late 90s period cannot say the same.

The movie itself is great as well, building a world that feels real if a little ridiculous at times, though this is intentional, especially the news broadcasts which are a natural progression from Robocop.

A great underrated movie

Some people love it, some people hate it. I love it. This was one of the last movies directed by Paul Verhoeven before getting kick out of Hollywood. Unfortunately, it wasn't a success and it didn't help recoverning the damages caused by 'Showgirls'. To be honest, I think it is a shame and, in my opinion, it is definitely the most underrated movie directed by Paul Verhoeven and, in fact, it is probably one of the most underrated movies even made. Indeed, in my opinion, it is actually really entertaining with some good action scenes and some nice special effects. On one hand, on the outside, it is basically a big SF show but, on the other hand, it is also a big satire about how war is actually completely stupid and meaningless. Finally, as usual in a Verhoeven movie, you had this sexual tension between the characters which gives you the feeling that, at any moment, they're going to rip their clothes off and start humping each other. Personally, I think it is a great mix and it's too bad this movie is completey misunderstood and underappreciated. Anyway, to conclude, it is actually one of the best movies directed by the Great Dutch master and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Verhoeven's work.

Excellent

On one level Starship Troopers works as an intense sci-fi/action flick with great battle scenes and spectacular special effects. But going beyond that it provides excellent commentary on fascism, power and war.

Living in a militaristic future, our heroes, high school graduates at the start of the film, feel it is their civic duty to serve. They do this not fully realizing just what a sacrifice this will entail especially since they'll soon be at war with the bugs. They are transformed from wide-eyed innocents to battled-hardened warriors. This is especially seen near the end when Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) tells Ace (Jake Busey), "We're the old men now". This coming a year after they enlisted.

I thought most of the actors did a decent job except for Denise Richards as Carmen Ibanez who got on my nerves. That woman can only express two emotions - sparkling eyes for happiness, doe eyes for fear.

Starship Troopers is insanely violent - people get cut to pieces before your eyes and some of the action is played for laughs, sometimes uncomfortably so. The special effects are fantastic - the bugs are scary as hell and there are great imagery of the various ships in space.

I'll be honest - I was put off watching Starship Troopers because of all the negative reviews. But after seeing it, I tip my hat of to Paul Verhoeven for creating this amazing movie.

"They sucked his brains out."

Okay, I saw this in the theater with a few friends and we certainly didn't expect to get much out of it. But, when we realized how graphic and violent, over the top and ridiculous it was, we had a good time.

Yes, it is kinda stupid at times, but if you don't expect much in terms of scintillating dialog, just stay for the parts where they blow up the bugs and stuff. You don't have to think much while watching this one.
