An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 9 months ago on 8 July 2016 09:02

Ever since I saw 'Ex Machina', I have been fascinated by Alicia Vikander and I have decided to watch as many movies as possible starring this young up-and-coming actress and since this movie was available on HBO, I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, I thought it was a decent crime thriller but it was still missing something to really win me over. Basically, it was really well made and I really enjoyed the tone. Furthermore, once again, Ewan McGregor really impressed as he remains one of the most interesting actors at work nowadays. This young boy, Brenton Thwaites, was also pretty good and I didnโ€™t realize that I already saw him recently in 'The Giver' (probably because it was a really weak feature).Eventually, what bothered me with this movie was not only the fact that it was rather derivative but there were also some elements that didn't work really well. For example, the whole chess thing, although I really love movies dealing with chess, felt like a really cheap gimmick to get the characters acquainted to each another. Furthermore, the whole thing about this young boy falling in love with some girl working for their boss was really unoriginal and rather underwhelming. To conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was still a decent watch though and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
