Overly epic but watchable

This film has its moments but tries too hard to be epic. The premise is a little thin; that Laurel (Jodie Foster) would wilfully accept a stranger without saying anything or else forget what her husband was like. It was important for her to have a man in her life, back then it was almost mandatory, but Orin was at heart a good man who loved her. If you can look past that, it's an ok date-night fi... read more

An average movie

In my opinion, this movie is the perfect example what went/is wrong with Richard Gere’s career. Personally, I don’t think he is actually a bad actor, actually he can be pretty intense, but most of his movies focus on his heatthrob image which is a mistake, in my opinion. Indeed, it is fine to look at a good-looking actor or actress but, after 5 minutes, it gets very old and, eventually, it is ... read more

BradWesley123's Movie Journal- October 2018 (23 movies items)

" Netflix- 1hr. 53min. First Viewing Exceptionally made is it is, Sommersby is staggeringly dull for such a powerful story. In nearly every scene, Jon Amiel's direction seems off; scenes that should be big and rousing are low-energy, scenes that should be underplayed are blown out of proportion, emotion scenes are cold, etc. The script isn't great, but the material is never really given a chance to breath. It also doesn't help that Gere is miscast, rarely selling his character's ambiguity and ove"

" Director: Jon Amiel Starring: Richard Gere, Jodie Foster, Bill Pullman and James Earl Jones Set in the south of the United States just after the Civil War, Laurel Sommersby is just managing to work the farm without her husband Jack, believed killed in the Civil War. By all accounts, Jack Sommersby was not a pleasant man, thus when he returns, Laurel has mixed emotions. It appears that Jack has changed a great deal, leading some people to believe that this is not actually Jack but an impostor."
