And then there was Disney,,,

Posted : 2 months, 4 weeks ago on 27 January 2024 11:12

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the very first animated film featured by Disney and one of the most charming. While it's a bit different from the original fairy tale, Walt Disney took this familiar classic and turned into a family film that is still talked about over 60 years later. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is such a charming film and is another example of beautiful animation and a terrific story that could charm it's way into your heart. I still enjoy watching this film to this day, who could love the seven dwarfs? They all were so funny to watch and are so memorable. They pretty much represent our moods, they're kinda like a mood ring that's put into one room, lol. But Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the perfect family film that is still holding up very well all these years.

Snow White is a lovely princess who one day is just traveling through the forest. She comes across a house where it's a total mess, she decides to clean it as a favor to those who are living there. It turns out that seven dwarfs live there and when they find her, they realize they got a good thing going here, a hot girl who'll clean for them. But not everything is happy, the evil wicked queen wants to be the fairest in the land and Snow White has just beat her by a land slide. So she disguises herself as a witch and offers Snow White an apple, she eats it, and dies. Now the queen's the hottest girl in town, but the dwarfs come up with a clever plan to get her true love, the prince, he must kill the queen and save Snow White so they could live happily ever after.

I'd say that's a nice summary, I try my best anyways. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is just one of the greatest Disney films ever made. It's such a charming film and is very much apart of our pop culture today and as far as films go, this is just a great one. I can't wait to show this to my kids one day, they'll probably laugh thinking how old this movie is that it's hand drawn, but I think that's what makes it so special. The voices, the songs, the animation, everything about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was just beautiful. I highly recommend this, it's a great family film.

10/10

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs review

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs review

(OK) Heroic for being the firs long featur in animation; and a showmanship of all Disney: humanized animal, nature cycles, well constructed sequences, hard almost adult fantasy told for children...

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 6 December 2015 06:40

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is one of the few classic films that I can tell you exactly when I saw it. In 1993, I was six-years-old, and Disney had re-released the film in theaters a few months before the eventual VHS release. My mom took me to see it, and the magic mirror on the wall freaked me out, but in a way that I found enjoyable. I think  this was the exact moment I realized I’ll always love the villains more than the heroes in many Disney films.

Who could blame me? It’s not like Snow White or her prince are given much in the way of personality. No, they’re both handsome blobs of color and shape, chess pieces used by other characters to move the plot along. I thought then, and still believe now, that the magic mirror needed a good cleaning if it thought that pubescent girl was more beautiful than the Evil Queen, a glamorous and enigmatic figure, dripping with the promise of malice and cunning.

God, what a difficult film to talk about as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs practically added itself to the canon the moment it was released, after a three-year production period that left Disney praying it would connection. It did, in a major way. Hailed as a masterpiece by Sergei Eisenstein, who would know a thing or two about making film masterpieces, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was a huge hit, and a promise of things to come. So what left is there to talk about?

Well, I hope to find something to add. Who knows if it’ll be of any value.

Let us first look at the technique on display. Prior to Walt Disney and Max Fleischer pushing animation to the brink of its creative and artistic promise, cartoons were regulated to children’s entertainment, six-to-ten minutes of filler between live-action shorts, new reels, and the features. They featured crudely drawn characters acting out popular songs, everything appeared rubbery and bouncing away. Or, backgrounds were static and the characters were lively and energetic creatures, bounding around the limits of the frame causing chaos.

Fleischer pushed the short into more daring and artistic realms, while Disney decided that the world was ready for feature-length animated films. No one else saw his vision, and the press was quick to dub the film “Disney’s Folly,” a cynical jab at his quest for bringing prestige to the art form and his own studio. The production was not easy, Disney mortgaged his house, and the production ran over budget to the final tune of roughly $1.5 million, an unthinkable sum for a feature in 1937. It took three long years, but when the film was finally released it silenced everyone.

No longer were the characters confined to a static frame, no longer were the backgrounds immobile, everything was free from the limitations of physics and gravity, and the only limit was the artist’s imagination. The multi-plane camera allowed the camera to pan through locations until arriving at the final destination, much in the way a tracking or dolly shot allowed for in live-action. An off screen breeze caused the leaves to blow, birds spiraled in and out of the corners of the frame, and the feeling of possibility is alive in the film.

The story may be slim, even at 83 minutes there does appear to be some padding, but the animation is hypnotic to watch. The quality of the drawings are impossibly high, the characters designs specific and unique, and the big-money moments highly memorable and well done. Snow White’s frightening trip through the forest is the stuff of nightmares, as she imagines branches turning into monstrous hands, trees into demonic figures, and floating logs into crocodiles. It is still wonderful to behold this sequence, as it is so imaginative and alive.

Even better are the segments where Snow White and the forest animals clean up the dwarfs house, or our first interaction with the dwarfs in the diamond, and everything with the Evil Queen is stellar. No sequence is more disturbing than her transformation from glamorous queen to old hag. Her hands changing still creeps me out, now that is some primal power.

With a slim source material, the fairy tale is only a few brisk pages in my copy of The Complete Grimm’s Fairy Tales, it was necessary to add to it. The dwarfs barely occupy a few sentences in the source text, but they’re the true stars here (along with the Evil Queen). Disney would revisit the ingredients here many times over, but to watch this film is to see them being born before your eyes. So yes, some of it plays awkwardly, even unevenly at times, but these growing pains come with being the first major work of its kind.

I don’t hold these moments against the film. How could you? This had never been attempted on this grand a scale before, and what it lacks in narrative coherence it more than makes up for with the quality of its animation, memorable segments, and beloved characters. I’ve always been partial to the stuttering Doc, surly Grumpy, and the Harpo Marx-like Dopey, who appears to have a second center of gravity in his pelvis and frequently leads with his lower half.  Without this film, there would be no Disney feature films. But there also wouldn’t be an entire secondary movie industry, no Disney means no Pixar, Studio Ghibli, DreamWorks, and all the rest. Undoubtedly, this is one of the all-time greatest films. The following three films would surpass it in the Golden Era, and various films from the other eras would as well, but it somehow seems unfair to compare to what came after.

A classic

Posted : 8 years, 7 months ago on 13 September 2015 03:15

Even though it is almost 80 years old, it is still an impressive piece of work. Indeed, at the time, it was the very first full length animated feature, a huge gamble for Walt Disney, but this gamble paid off as it was a big box-office hit and it started the massive empire of Disney in the film business. Eventually, this movie would become the blueprint for their future work and, after all these years, the timeless fairy tales are still their most enduring trademark. Fortunately, they have the financial means to maintain their work and this movie has been restored already a couple of times and it still look quite amazing. Of course, they would improve and/or diversify their technic through the years but this one was already quite gorgeous to look at. To be honest, even though the story was charming and the dwarves pretty hilarious, the plot was decent but not really strong, in my opinion. For example, they spent half of the running time with Snow White getting to their home and getting acquainted with those fellows while everything involving the prince was seriously underwritten. Indeed, nowadays, this whole concept of this prince coming up from nowhere and basically saving the day seems rather hard to swallow for the modern audience (see 'Frozen' and 'Maleficent', also both Disney productions). Anyway, to conclude, even though it might seem outdated, it remains a timeless classic nonetheless and it is definitely worth a look.

Enjoyable

Another Disney classic, that keeps me glued to the TV. We all know the story of Snow White and all the great songs that come with it. This is probably my first viewing as an adult and I did enjoy the movie a lot. The beginning is a little slow, but once the Huntsman has his decision to make the movie takes off. I also love the intro for the dwarfs I thought it was a great introduction for them, and kept me interested. I think every scene after that was quit memorable. I cared about Snow White and the dwarfs especially when they first see her in bed. I did think the ending was a little short, and just ends like that. I thought it could have been a little dragged out, but I felt it was just like here ya go end! Other than the movie was very enjoyable, it was funny, and I defiantly cared about the characters

A world-changing era has begun!

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 2 August 2010 03:53

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is where it all began and was the dawning of a new era. Walt Disney was and still is one of the world's biggest icons and I am proud to say that Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs was the start of all this magic that we see today! The animation is obviously cheesy compared to animation nowadays but that film as well as most Disney Classics before the 1990s has a great gift and that was with the drawings that made them into animated features. Because of the seven dwarfs with the seven different personalities, this film probably taught other filmmakers how to mix different sorts of characters together in a film. It was beautiful and inspiring not only because of the characters but because of the beautiful songs and the beautiful storyline of the film in general. It really made me feel great because there were some scenes that were just adorable and were just so peaceful to watch you could just cry.

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is the beautiful fairy tale about a beautiful princess called Snow White who is forced to obey her stepmother who is the evil queen every whim, sees her prince charming while drawing water from the well. Meanwhile her evil stepmother discovers that not she but Snow White is "the fairest of them all". So she orders a hunter to kill Snow White and bring back her heart in a case......The hunter, seeing how sweet Snow White is and recognizing the evil in the queen's heart let's her escape into the forest. Will Snow White escape her stepmother forever? Will she ever survive in the woods and will she ever be able to see her Prince Charming again? It is so beautiful because of all of the adorable and powerful characters. There isn't just Snow White and the dwarfs but the Queen, Huntsman and Magic Mirror are powerful characters too because they are better to figure out and are characters that take more twists and turns in a film. They are mostly the reasons why I like villain characters than hero ones because they are more powerful characters. This develops all sorts of different characters that have never been mixed into one film before. Especially the seven dwarfs because they all have different personalities and their main personality is their name. There are Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Dopey and Sneezy.

The direction was really good and was really well written too. Every scene adapted really well. I remember when I was a little kid watching this film on video/VHS and there was a special feature of how they made the film including comments from Walt Disney. There was a scene that was really good but wasn't really essential to the story. There is another song that is sung during the meal of the dwarfs and Snow White. That would have been an inappropriate scene to add to the film even though I enjoyed the scene a lot.

Overall, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is one of the most important feature films in the history of cinema and rightly so! Disney starts off with a bang and there aren't that many at all who have reached to the standard of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.
