"When it comes to these show-musicals I tend to prefer the rougher pre-code ones. Which isn't to detract from the standout numbers here (look, the movie is named after one for a reason) or any moment of Gene Kelly's dancing or Debbie Reynolds' dancing, but this thing didn't grab me overall despite the setting being very interesting. I don't think they went too deep into the transition from silents to talkies, and barely milked the comedy inherent to the process. If this had like two less slapstic"
"“Singin’ in the Rain is a perfect marriage of music and filmmaking. The songs and the numbers not only make sense but they advance the story. And the story itself is a wonderful look at Hollywood’s transition from silent movies to sound, replete with nervous studio bosses, emerging contract players, and established stars tripping over their own eyes. It’s as sharp and as fast as anything before or since.” -Rob Reiner"
" Notes: First of all, even though I never really cared for Fred Astaire, I always thought that Gene Kelly was very charismatic and he was, of course, a great dancer but, even though this movie was supposed to be his magnum opus, I have to admit that I had a rather hard time to really care about the damned thing. I mean, sure , I did like it but I can't say it really blew me away. Even though the story is usually the weakest point in most of the musicals I have seen, I actually enjoyed this plot"

"First viewing - Feb. 22nd My buddy at work brought up Singin' in the Rain and I admitted I'd never seen it and he was baffled. I explained that it's largely because I'm not a fan of musicals, but also I've never had any friends or significant others who insisted I watch it with them so it's never been a priority. He then loaned it to me and suggested I watch it with the kiddo, which I did. And to my surprise I wound up pretty much loving it. It helps that some of the musical numbers are funny ("
