An average movie

Posted : 8 years ago on 18 April 2016 09:35

Back in the 90's, when I was pretty much starting to discover the greatest treasures  in the motion picture history, Ken Loach was definitely one of my favorite directors but, even though by now I have been following him for about 20 years, I have to admit that it has been a while since he really impressed me. This movie was in fact a perfect example. I mean, it was in fact a really neat idea, probably the best concept developed by Loach in many years. Indeed, it was dealing with a very topical subject and there was a great opportunity to create a realistic but still nail-biting  thriller. Unfortunately, the whole thing turned out to be rather half-baked  when it could have been so much better. The first mistake was to give Frankie's girlfriend such a central role when, in fact, she was just there so that the main character had a sidekick  during his investigation but she didn't provide any help whatsoever. And the fact that they eventually ended up in bed was even worse and seemed to belong more to an average Hollywood thriller. Finally, the whole thing was just too slow and, honestly, rather poorly written. To conclude, even though it was disappointing, I still think it was a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you're interested in Ken Loach's work.
