A classic

Posted : 8 years, 12 months ago on 3 April 2015 11:02

Honestly, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely watch it again whenever I have the opportunity. Back in those days, after making only one full length feature in Poland (the also brilliant ‘Nóz w wodzie’), Roman Polanski didn’t hang around very long and took off pretty much right away to start an international career. Eventually, his first stop would be in England and, there, he made his first genuine masterpiece. Indeed, if his directing debut was pretty impressive, this sophomore effort was just quite mind-blowing. Basically, there was no much plot whatsoever, but instead, you were immersed into the nightmarish world of the main character played by the ultimate Ice Queen, Catherine Deneuve. The juxtaposition of her incredible natural beauty with her obvious mental meltdown was just one of a kind and one of the most spellbinding depiction of madness you'll ever see on the silver screen. From the very beginning, it was pretty obvious that Polanski was not interested in stereotypical righteous heros and he would rather give us some twisted and rather messed up characters, something I always found much more compelling to behold. To conclude, it definitely belongs to the numerous classics directed by this great master and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Roman Polanski’s work.

Repulsion review

My first viewing, but wow! This film takes visual storytelling to a whole new level! And the use of sound is extraordinary, whether it's doorbells ringing, phones ringing, flies buzzing or knives slashing and since there's a limited amount of actual music they become the soundtrack. It's a tough watch as there are plenty of vile images (the skinned rabbit which is just left to be devoured by the flies for example) and I think there is one rape scene too many, but it's a film I definitely need to see again to gather my thoughts - I wasn't all that keen on the final third, but that could have been the coffee I'd just drank kicking in, I don't know. The cast are great, I think Ian Hendry is an underappreciated actor even if his part isn't all that big in this film, Catherine Deneuve does a great job, right down to the nervous twitch that her character has, but I think my favourite performance was from Yvonne Furneaux. Love the cut where Hendry takes a run to break down the door and Deneuve 'bounces' off it. The final shots of the photograph were quite disturbing also. A bloody well made film.

Datato 1965.
VOTO: 6,5
