Ritt visits Paris with old cliches and some other in the making (free black people, jazz joints, gipsy addicts as Serge Reggiani etc.). Newman and Woodward tastes somo erotism new daring to USA butaged to France. Louis Armstrong pays a visit.

I think the four credited writers it took to adapt Harold Flender’s 1957 novel are the biggest tell that something is going to be ‘off’ with the final product. Sure enough, this one has got to be a lesser, if not the least, entry in the collaboration between director Martin Ritt and star Paul Newman. Description: In PARIS BLUES, Ram Bowen (Paul Newman) and Eddie Cook (Sidney Poitier) are two expatriate jazz musicians living in Paris, where racism is less pervasive than in America. When they meet and fall in love with two young American girls, Lillian and Connie, who are vacationing in France, Ram and Eddie must decide whether they should move back to America with them, or stay in Paris for the freedom it allows them. Sure enough, this one has got to be a lesser, if not the least, entry in the collaboration between director Martin Ritt and star Paul Newman. How you assemble as cast as wonderful as Newman, Joanne Woodward, Sidney Poitier, and Diahann Carroll then sack them with such a milquetoast plot is anyone’s guess. At least there’s a vibrant score from Duke Ellington and some wonderful shots of Paris to keep things interesting. It all boils down to the story of two expat American jazz musicians (Newman, Poitier) who meet-cute with two American women on vacation (Woodward, Carroll).
