An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 19 April 2021 08:59

To be honest, I wan’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Shia LaBeouf and Evan Rachel Wood, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even if it wasn’t a complete disaster, I’m afraid the damned thing never really worked for me. Basically, it was one of these quirky indie love features and, while the whole thing was still quite whimsical, it mostly stood out for how bleak the tone turned out to be. In fact, this approach didn’t bother me, in the contrary, what bother me more was how completely random the damned thing was. Indeed, right from the start, the ghost of the main character’s mother showed up to tell him to go to Bucharest for really no reason whatsoever and, from that point on, the randomness really never stopped ever. I mean, there was even Ron Weasley playing some kind of wannabe porn actor, for crying out loud. And yet, even though Shia LaBeouf is getting an increasingly lousy reputation, the guy is just so good playing such lost souls and, even if the material was constantly borderline preposterous, he was actually always convincing and entertaining to behold. Concerning Evan Rachel Wood, I had some rather mixed feelings. I mean, she was, as usual, quite charismatic and her performance was not bad but it was rather disappointing that they didn’t hire a Romanian actress to play this part. In fact, except for the guy who died in the plane after 10 mins, none of the major actors involved was actually from Romania which made the whole thing look even more fake than it already was. Anyway, to conclude, my rating might have been harsh this time around since there were some elements that I actually did enjoy, still, most of it was actually pretty weak and, eventually, I don’t think it is really worth a look.

Charlie Countryman review

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 23 June 2015 12:07

Initial Thought: I have been meaning to watch this for awhile now. I remember thinking the trailer looked unusual and had to know what exactly was going on. Not to mention it has quite a good cast. I finally chose to watch it now after a coworker mentioned it to me.

Characters/Acting: This cast includes quite some big names including Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood, Mads Mikkelsen, and Vincent D'Onofrio, etc. It's good to see Rupert Grint still in the industry. It seems he is the least successful of the three main young actors. Evan Rachel Wood pulls of the Romanian accent and look off with such perfection. If you weren't familiar with her you would think she was Romanian. Everyone's performances here are quite good. Mads Mikkelsen is flawless as the dangerous ex-husband Nigel. He isn't on-screen too often, but when he is you know it's going to get intense.

Story: A young man with disturbing visions goes to Romania and falls in love with a local cellist who has a twisted ex. This is quite visually stunning. I liked the visual representation of the souls leaving people who died. That to me was beautifully poetic. It's amazing how death can actually lead to a new life. We see two people who come together through the death of loved ones and become united by more than just that. I absolutely loved that ending.

Directing/Writing: This happens to be Fredrik Bond's feature film debut. It looks like he has a future with the way this film looks visually. Matt Drake is also the writer of Project X which was a blast to watch. These guys really know how to put magnificence in a film. Everything they did here just put me in awe. We need more films from these guys especially if they do as well as they did here.

Final Thought: That was an absolute pleasure to watch. I consider this to be an experience rather than just another movie. The performances are spot on. It's quirky and has moments where it gets pretty intense. I think it's a romance as much for women as it is for men. I believe it's underrated and one that many people seem to have missed. I highly recommend checking this one out if you are one that hasn't.

The love story of Charlie and Gabi

Posted : 10 years, 2 months ago on 26 January 2014 06:43

Not good as I expected, but okay. Even the performances were not much recognizable, but the characters were very catchy for the uniqueness. In this movie, everything was about the strange and weird way of story telling. The mix between fantasy and realistic was well done. Something was lacking in the movie, it got a stylish presentation, but not the proper scenes in many portions. But still enjoyable like having two minds about it.

It tells the story of a young man Charlie Country. After his mother who was in coma dies, he leaves the country to spend few days in Romania. Then he meets a girls Gabi and falls in love without knowing her background. Like the movie 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' he has to face his strong opponent to win her. As he knows the risk how smart he would act to gain his desired girl is the movie of the rest.

I did not find any similarity in the interaction between the characters Charlie and Gabi, what we call it a chemistry, right!. One of the major problems the movie had along in my opinion. Other than that I liked Gabi as individually, she was very attractive in the role and costume. Mikkelsen was as usual very good. His role was a major one, but did not have sufficient screen space. And Shia were okay, sometime, in some parts I thought he overdone the role Charlie. Overall, I find it a good movie, but not the best.
