Lively colourful and entertaining!

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 18 December 2022 05:25

Nanny McPhee is an example of a film where I was put off by the trailers, but I am glad I saw the film, because it is a lively, well meaning and very colourful film. Not to mention entertaining... there are some very amusing scenes in the early parts of the film, with the children, who all gave spirited performances. The costumes and sets are very colourful, with beautiful vivid colours, perhaps a bit too much at times, but you can't deny the look of the film was lovely. The script was absolutely delightful, very lively and entertaining. But what made this film was the performance of Emma Thompson, who was just terrific. As was Colin Firth, and I thoroughly enjoyed Angela Lansbury's turn as an elderly aristocrat. The ending was easily the best scene of the film, the visuals were just amazing in that scene, and the music by Patrick Doyle was fun too. However, adults may get tired of some of the jokes, and there are some slow moments in the middle half, but I commend the film for its messaging, that were well meaning and thoughtful. All in all, a very enjoyable film, perhaps more for children, but adults will like the visuals and Emma Thompson. 8/10 Bethany Cox

An ugly version of 'Mary Poppins'

Posted : 10 years, 6 months ago on 5 October 2013 01:51

'Nanny McPhee' will please children but it's not likely to be enjoyed by grown-ups

'Nanny McPhee' is really an ugly version of 'Mary Poppins' (Emma Thompson is even in the upcoming movie 'Saving Mr Banks') and far from being a masterpiece, even though the cast is pretty good (Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Kelly MacDonald, Angela Lansbury, Celia Imrie, Imelda Staunton, Thomas Sangster), most of the acting isn't very good, Angela Lansbury and Imelda Staunton are over the top, Kelly MacDonald, Eliza Bennett, Samuel Honywood and Holly Gibbs don't give a crap and Colin Firth is in the wrong movie - his performance is overally depressed, he's playing a depressed character but he gives the same performance throughout most of the movie (including many scenes when his character isn't sad)

Honestly, my brother wants to watch this all the time and I must've seen it at least 100 times by now, I wish he'd pick a much better movie as this one is just so tedious (so is 'Nim's Island' which he always chooses as well)

To conclude I think it is only really worth a look if you have young children, but even then there are many better movies you can watch.

An average movie

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Emma Thomspon, I still wanted to check it out. Honestly, it is quite sad that such a terrific actress like her nowadays would get the lead only for such a tedious family feature. Apparently, she even wrote the screenplay which is even sadder. Indeed, back in the 90’s, she won an Academy Award for the screenplay she wrote for ‘Sense and Sensibility’. To make it clear, I thought this movie was a huge step down for her. Maybe I shouldn’t be so harsh since it is a just a children feature and, indeed, kids might like it more than I did but I still think it was a really tedious flick to watch. I mean, the whole thing was rather well made, there was a decent cast (Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Kelly Macdonald, Angela Lansbury, Imelda Staunton) but the plot was hardly original. Indeed, in my opinion, this character is just a rather ugly version of Mary Poppins, not much more than that I’m afraid. Above all, I thought the whole thing was just really generic, predictable and above all really boring to watch. Eventually, they still managed to make a sequel out of this, a sequel which I found just as boring, but my 6 years old daughter enjoyed it more than the original installment. Anyway, in my opinion, this movie is a waste of talent, it is just a boring family feature and there are tons of better movies you can watch with your kids.
