It will break your heart

"Slasher" - sub-genre of horror films, which takes its beginning, from Alfred Hitchcock, from the movie "Psycho". The essence of the Source engine as follows: the main character, usually in a mask, kills a photogenic teenagers all possible kinds of bladed weapons, kills beautifully and with particular brutality. In the genre have been and are films such as "Friday 13", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street". Films on this theme could clone hundreds, even thousands, for some it turns out well, some not. "My Bloody Valentine", refers more to the first!

About the film

What actually constitutes a "Valentine" ... Actually nothing special!

The plot is simple and banal, in front of us - a love triangle. Volume, Sarah Palmer.

The history goes back a long time ago. Ten years ago when all the main characters are teenagers, and doing things which are peculiar to their age, ie, drinking beer, and looking for adventure! In one fine night, the whole group gathers in the mines and solves for them to wander, but they meet at the entrance to a miner who begins to violently kill them. Tom remained with him ...

Then the plot throws at us next ten years, the ghosts of the past behind him, Alex is living with Sarah, they had a son, a big house, life seems to be a success, but suddenly the city comes to Tom, to sell that ill-starred mine, which belongs to him by inheritance, in start getting killed ...

Plot is nothing special of themselves does not represent, does not give ground for reflection, not a particularly shocking denouement, in general - the typical stamp! We are slowly and slowly lead from start to finish, lead, leaving it in the way of mountains of corpses and bloodshed.

What to say about the plot: it is not bad, the plot is, which is not peculiar slasher, pripletenie mysticism and psychology, this is in any gate not climbing.

What to say about the visual component: it is very pretty. One of the properties of the genre, it's panoramic views in this regard, all went close, but the beginning we were shown a pair of safety cameras across the city, but all this is done on an amateur level, Patrick Lussat is not a director, master, and did not remove anything from this item that can stay in memory, so do not wait for the movie studio pictures, exciting species, beautiful scenery, to remakes Marcus Nispel, still crawling and crawling ...

The main and fundamental element slasher - this is of course killing, more killing will be bloodier and more beautiful, the more they will like the public. In "Valentine," murder certainly there. They are few, but they were performed on faint little Quartet, with views over the massacre victims is always wrong, the operator somewhere in the party affected and the film's budget, because of which we can not see dismemberment completely. But basically, everything on the level.

Actors: here a different story ... Well done, other words are not there! Committed, teens to their very young age played their roles perfectly. What can we say about them as Jensen Eccles and Kerr Smith, who has a not small cinematic experience.

For serious disadvantage is, heroes, supermen, who as always run at breakneck speed, only to find out the truth without fearing for their lives.

Just irritating cliches, like "Shut in an abandoned house, where for 10 years no one lives, he stands right in the middle of the forest, in the very middle of nowhere."

As a result, we have quite a watch slasher, one or two times, not more. It also can skip past the eye, as the creators stick basic elements of the genre and not a derailment, mainstream slasher, so to speak ...

While at the moment, in his case, remain Nispel, Dansten. These people have potential, and it is their Source engine still remains an icon of the modern genre.

Plot - 6 (plot is nothing new we have not suggested that the old tale in a new way, in general - the standard rails story, and when the outcome began to take on mysticism, this is no good, we're still looking slasher!)

Atmosphere - 7 (Done very well, but before the masters of the genre does not hold, not creating an atmosphere of escalating suspense, moments when to be afraid, for some reason it seems ridiculous, or vice versa.)

Actors - 10 (Come here, without comment, the work on themselves, and feel the desire to create!)

Editing and Cinematography - 9 (All right, what about a bullet through the body in the slo-mo, assembling a good, nothing is clipped, all assembled for the audience, simply and tastefully.)

"My Bloody Valentine" gets away from me, receives well-deserved, its hard ...

My Bloody Valentine review

In fact, technically this is not a remake. I must admit that the original MBV is among my favourite horror movies for its sheer originality and genuine atmosphere. The so-called remake is like a version of Einstein's theory of relativity brought forth by someone having soccer as his or hers major. Nothing aganist soccer, but the point is that it might help to actually get familiar with the genre before trying to make films in that genre. Without a crystal ball I see... Halloween, Haute Tension... and VERY little of My Bloody Valentine! C'mon, you had a perfect script, why spoil it!! The 3D effects are lame and I don't understand the wonder of watching a film without proper colour. 3d is stupid.

Having just recently seen and appreciated even more the original "My Bloody Valentine," I tried to go into this remake/reimagining with zero expectations and an open mind. I'm pretty hip to how remakes are done these days; that is, reference the original film, and if the director is remaking a slasher, keep the iconic villain in tow but alter him slightly. The remakes of today seem to owe nothing to the past, where faithful updatings like "Night of the Living Dead (1990)" changed so little, it was hard for them to miss.

More like reboots than remakes, and more modernized than the films they cull inspiration from, it's only right that they pull in the youngsters (despite this film's deserved hard R-rating) and rake in the cash. But when all of the dust settles and all of the unoriginal re-toolings have ceased, which ones will stand out? Which ones will be upheld for the next handful of generations to enjoy and recognize as true examples of their genre?

In blunt honesty, "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" won't be one them. Without the admittedly excellent 3-D effect, this would be just another by-the-numbers slasher film that thinks itโ€™s such an original throwback to the glory days of the subgenre when, in fact, it often approaches hilarity and is carried by an aura of sheer stupidity because of it. "The Miner" character is one of the great things about the movie, though, and also one of the only reasons to see it aside from the aforementioned 3-D hook. I cared little about the characters (a great plus from the original was that the characters were very likeable) and their melodramatic sob stories. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to laugh at the dialogue or say, "Hey, this is really reminiscent of those '80s slashers we all grew up on." Some of the events that transpired went beyond the ridiculous and bordered on the inane. Perhaps it was all in good fun and purposely campy, but it drew me out of the picture as a result.

The film's problem of not knowing when to play it serious and when to laugh at itself was a huge mistake on director Patrick Lussier's part, as well as the fact that screenwriter Todd Farmer's dialogue and the cast's resulting performances were embarrassingly hit-or-miss. The altering of the plot from the original film was a big misstep also. Who cares about Tom Hanniger (Jensen Ackles) selling his fathers' mine? Who cares that Axel Palmer (Kerr Smith) is cheating on his wife? None of these events are fleshed out enough for us to care whatsoever. The film is just one big setup for the next 3-D gag and the next satisfying gory set piece (of which there are plenty).

There has also been talk over the picture's ending(s). I found it very anti-climactic, because by process of elimination, the simplistic "whodunit" is easy enough to figure out. The "big" reveal isn't a mind-blower and the last few minutes of the film sticks rather closely to the spirit of the original (which is a plus), but it could have been written and executed so much better.

So why am I still awarding this film a three-and-a-half after all that? It's simple. The trailers promised a "carnival ride" of sorts and that is exactly what this film delivers. Despite its amateur direction and shoddy lighting, and despite the horrid script and mediocre performances, there is enough gore here to satisfy just about anyone and the 3-D is just so mesmerizing - especially considering the fact that it is being harbored by a "throwback" slasher flick - that the film can be recommended based purely on these merits. High art this is not, but "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" comes with my seal of approval to those who aren't looking for the Holy Grail of horror and simply want great 3-D in a superbly gory package.
