Mrs. Doubtfire review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 24 March 2022 05:28

What a thoroughly enjoyable movie. I really like Robin Williams, an actor that is I personally don't care for him that much as a comedian, and the roles of Daniel Hillard and Mrs Doubtfire were perfect for him. While he was fine as Daniel, it is his tour-de-force performance of Mrs Doubtfire that drives the film. Plus the make up used on him was fantastic. Also worthy of credit is director Chris Columbus, who nails the use of Williams's exuberance and quick-fire personality, and because of this every gag hits the right buttons. There are cracking set pieces such as the make up experiments and the series of table hopping quick changes. And I for one liked the routine with the dinosaur, it wasn't one of the better gags but it was funny. Pierce Brosnan also does surprisingly well as the bachelor looking for a ready-made family, and Mara Wilson gives one of her better performances as Natalie, very delightful and charming her performance was. The script is also funny and touching, the score is warm and sweet and the film is very nice to look at. Some people didn't like the ending, but I had no real problem with it personally. My only complaints are that the film is a little too long and Sally Field overdoes the exasperation slightly as the mother, but overall this is a delightful film, no matter how many times you see it, you are likely to love it every time, whether it is Williams, the gags or Wilson. 9/10 Bethany Cox

An average movie

Almost a year ago, Robin Williams passed away with some really dramatic circumstances so it is with some mixed feelings that I look back at his work. For example, this movie was definitely one of his biggest box-office successes and, 20 years later, it is still very popular but, to be honest, it is not really good, I’m afraid. First of all, the whole gimmick of a man disguising himself as a woman not by choice but just to trick someone for any kind of reasons, never really appealed to me. I mean, ‘Some like it Hot’ remains by far the best one in this genre but even ‘Tootsie’ which is quite a classic never really worked for me either. In this case, sure, the make-up was pretty good and Robin Williams goes really wild with this character but the fact remains that it is actually a really stupid story. Basically, it seems that everyone has agreed that it doesn’t matter that plot is idiotic as long as we get to see Williams doing his usual hysterical act. On top of that, I thought it was just mildly amusing but never actually hilarious. To conclude, I think this movie is seriously overrated and I don’t think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of Robin William.

Is Mrs. Doubtfire Really That Good?

Posted : 9 years, 8 months ago on 11 August 2014 11:55

Due to the passing of Robin Williams, I have decided to write a review for one of his most well-known movies, Mrs. Doubtfire. What do I think of this movie? Well, I am going to be quite honest with my review, so if you don't like the review, I understand.

Mrs. Doubtfire focuses on Robin Williams' character Daniel, a loving father with 3 children, the youngest played by Mara Wilson. For the heck of it, he throws his son a birthday party. Said party had a petting zoo rental, which was illegal to have at their house, and there's also a huge mess. It makes Daniel's wife Miranda (Sally Field) so upset with him that she demands a divorce. Okay, so the party made a huge mess, but I think it's a rather frivolous reason for splitting up. Anyway, Daniel, now left alone, plans to visit his kids whenever he wants by disguising himself as a British nanny, the eponymous Mrs. Doubtfire. While this is happening, Miranda starts dating some Jefferson D'Arcy clone.

Okay, honesty time. Yes, this is a funny movie, and it can get heartwarming at times. However, I find Miranda to be a little too selfish half the time until the end, but thankfully, she's written as some sort of Defrosting Ice Queen, so there's no contempt towards her, and you actually feel sorry for her almost as much as you did for Daniel. I also like how realistically the kids are written, and that they were more sad than bitter about the idea of their parents breaking up. With all honesty, this isn't as great as what people think, but it's still a good movie, at least in its own merit. =)

My rating: 6/10

Mrs. Doubtfire review

Before I watched this all I was thinking was that it was going to be really stupid. I was totally wrong, I really liked this movie, it's surrounded by silliness I know, but it had a really important message to it, directed at adults and children and that's what I really liked about it. It wasn't just about the thrill to see a man dressed up as a woman, and so I really liked it. I can't believe its rating on IMDb...I'm very disappointed and saddened.

I think Robin Williams it a pretty solid actor, he can be very versatile, that's for sure. He's had some big hits, but I preferred this to most of them. Yes, that includes: Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting and only just Hook.

One of the main things I liked about this film was the great ending; it wasn't predictable and clichéd like most of these types of films are. The parents did not get back together in the end, which is a real turn around, very different indeed. William's is great at accents, eccentric? maybe, but what actors aren't?!

Inspiring family classic with important message...

Mrs. Doubtfire has proved itself to be one of the most beautiful, heartwarming and touching films to have ever hit the screen. This is a story that helps young children understand what sort of effect divorce could have on them and what the beauty outcome really is. It teaches no matter whether your parents are together or not, whoever you live with you will truly feel like family. This film is a massive inspiration to me for the main reason about divorce because my parents divorced when I was 13 and this is the one film that made me get over that and make me truly understand how to get over divorce. It made me really understand this. The quote at the very start of my review is that quote I am talking about. That just warms and melts my heart every time I see this film. Mrs. Doubtfire is a film that is full of comedy that you could just laugh at forever with all the awkward situations and the mistakes Daniel makes when he is Mrs. Doubtfire. Well, I could anyway. Mrs. Doubtfire became a sudden blockbuster in 1993. Mrs. Doubtfire is such a loving family phenomenon that could be watched again and again and again. It is a comedy with a lot of class and with a realistic life force that can make it so realistic.

Robin Williams' performance as Mrs. Doubtfire is very unforgettable because he makes both of the characters such inspirations to people just like they did to me. Robin's performance is one of the funniest performances of all time without a single doubt in my mind. His performance as Daniel is still hilarious as Daniel because he finds life really difficult especially when he is with his 2 daughters and son in an apartment only down the road from where his ex-wife lives. Daniel is a man who has a very stressful job and he wants to take his job one step higher but that leads him into a very awkward situation later in the film especially with Mrs. Doubtfire as well. The things that I loved the most about Robin's performance as Mrs. Doubtfire was that he made her really seem like a real person even though she really wasn't and also, when Robin is Daniel he teaches not only children who have a divorced father (like me) and teaches single fathers about what it's really about. Robin makes Daniel truly see how important his children are to him. Daniel was even crazy enough to disguise himself as a woman who is twice his age. Sally Field's performance was awesome as well. She is really awesome at playing a mother because she really acts and appears like a really loving one. Pierce Brosnan was good as Miranda's boyfriend because he was like a real slime ball as well as a caring person towards the three children. Daniel hates him and when he is Mrs. Doubtfire he/she tries to manipulate him and try and break down the relationship between him and Miranda. I really loved the three young children's performances: Lisa Jakub as Lydia, Matthew Lawrence as Chris and Mara Wilson as Natalie. They are all adults now with Lisa and Matthew in their 30s and Mara in her early 20s. Top-notch child acting that was funny and very heartfelt.

Chris Columbus has always had a talent at creating family films. He has created family phenomenons Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York and Harry Potter 1+2. Chris's directing was just amazing and that was because he made Mrs. Doubtfire such a hilarious, inspiring and very heartfelt story. The script was really fantastic as well that does touch people and make people laugh which is after all what Mrs. Doubtfire is meant to do.

Mrs. Doubtfire is definitely my favourite Robin Williams film. It is my favourite Sally Field film as well but I loved her performance in Forrest Gump just as much. Mrs. Doubtfire is one of my all-time favourite comedies with A Fish Called Wanda and Hot Fuzz. Mrs. Doubtfire is to me the comedy of the 1990s. This film is very similar to Tootsie but Mrs. Doubtfire is far better. This is one of my top 10 most inspiring films of all time and one of my top family films of all time as well. Mrs. Doubtfire is a loving film that I could watch over and over again.
