A good movie

Posted : 11 years, 11 months ago on 31 May 2012 07:46

I wasnโ€™t sure what to expect from this flick but since I kept hearing some interesting things about the damned thing, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, it turned out to be a seriously weird movie.. In fact, it had been a while since I saw such a bizarre flick. Visually, it was pretty amazing and it reminded me of the work of Terry Gilliam, Guillermo del Toro and 'The Fall' by Tarsem Singh. Basically, they gave us some wall-to-wall CGI with some impressive sets, strange costumes and excentric characters. Still, even though it was visually one of the most fascinating movies I have seen lately, the plot was actually nothing really mind-blowing, when you think about it. In fact, it was something I have experienced with many movies directed by Gilliam. Indeed, Gilliamโ€™s movies are visually appealing but also sometimes, rather alienating. I had the same feeling here and, honestly, the story was decent but not much more. So, I did like the damned thing but it is a matter of taste as Roger Ebert admired its artistry but thought that the plot was really underwhelming. He also mentionned that the whole thing was rather foggy (he had a point, during the whole thing, I even thought that there was something wrong with my TV-set...). Anyway, in spite of its flaws, this movie was visually fascinating and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you want to watch something else than your typical Hollywood flick.

Strange artisic fantasy film

Strange is the first word that comes to mind after watching MirrorMask but an enjoyable strange.
The film stars Helena, a girl whose parents are circus owners and performers and when her mother falls ill and she blames herself because they had fought earlier. Helena falls asleep and when she wakes up she finds herself in a strange world that is slowly being consumed by shadow. Helena finds out that there are two lands, the City of Light and Land of Shadow, and both have queens and someone looking like Helena stole the "charm" from the Light's queen and so now she can't awake and now the shadows are taking over. Helena finds out that the "charm" is really the MirrorMask and she sets out to find it and restore the balance.
Acting in the movie is okay but really nothing compared to the art.
Visually the art in the most of the movie is a mix of digital graphics and live action in a darker theme that is a very strange but fits the setting.
Music is also strange as most of the music isn't full orchestral but sounds like a small band from the circus.
MirrorMask is a strange fantasy movie with a so what interesting story but with art style that should be seen at least once.

Mirrormask review

This is a surprisingly good movie. Very much a film for anyone with a (visually) creative mind as this movie is visually appealing and artistic.

The storyline could probably have been worked on a little as it seemed the usual good vs evil plot. But as I've said, visually, this movie is a blast. The characters and critters involved are strange but appealing. Definitely one to watch, at least once anyway.
