A good movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Anne Fontaine, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be a decent portrayal of a young boy (and man) struggling with his homosexuality within an intolerant and hostile environment. In fact, the impact was so huge that the poor guy was still pretty much lost, even after finding s... read more

Description: Written by Anne Fontaine and Pierre Trividic, the story revolves around Martin Clément, born Marvin Bijou, who ran away from his hometown and his family. He retells his story through a stage play that proves to be a smash hit. But at what price? Interestingly, while the film borrows its central plot from the novel by Edouard Louis (which outlines the childhood and teenage years of a young boy in a village, where he is shunned by the inhabitants and even by his own family when he comes out as a homosexual), it simultaneously takes the story a littler further, as the movie follows the character until the age of 23, whereas the st ... A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Anne Fontaine, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be a decent portrayal of a young boy (and man) struggling with his homosexuality within an intolerant and hostile environment. In fact, the impact was so huge that the poor guy was still pretty much lost, even after finding some kindred spirits. Eventually, it was a good reminder that, even if we are supposedly living a in a ‘modern’ and ‘progressive’ society, many gay kids still fall in a total vacuum with no support whatsoever which must be so heart-breaking and terrifying. Furthermore, Finnegan Oldfield and Jules Porier both gave some solid performances of the same character at different stages of his life.” read more

Film Journal 2018 (179 movies items)

"The highlight of this LGBTQ+-story is when it says that this film is like Salinger, then proceeds to produce a theatrical play that is supposedly the true work of a genius but we never see more than two minutes of it (and unfortunately those two minutes are not the work of a genius). Well, that and that when the alcoholic dad of our lead states that "having one is like having none." It honestly has something good to give around the end, but the meandering hour-and-half that lead up to it just ar"
