Enésima adaptación de la novela de Gustave Flaubert, la versión de Minnelli no es más que una blanda y academicista película que no pretende otra cosa que ilustrar fielmente el texto original. Pese a su pulcritud en la puesta en escena, la relamida historia sólo deja la sensación de estar asistiendo a la visión de un vetusto melodrama al que el paso del tiempo ha tratado mal.

Based on the French literary classic, this drama presents author Gustave Flaubert (James Mason) narrating his tale of infidelity and narcissism. After marrying small-town doctor Charles Bovary (Van Heflin), Emma (Jennifer Jones) becomes tired of her limited social status and begins to have affairs, first with the young Leon Dupuis (Christopher Kent) and later with the wealthy Rodolphe Boulanger (Louis Jourdan). Eventually, however, her self-involved behavior catches up with her.

Or that it’s several small somethings that are missing or slightly off which distorts the final product into something that’s decent enough. But decent enough isn’t good enough for a film with this pedigree. Chief among the problems is a wraparound segment that finds author Gustave Flaubert (James Mason, bringing gravitas to a cameo) on trial for obscenity. It looks and feels like a mandated exercise to the production code, and Madame Bovary’s problems begin to compound from there. It’s nearly impossible to tell the story of Bovary with one hand tied behind your back, which is what it looks like here as glossy MGM standards must be met a” read more
