The Last Temptation of Christ review

Posted : 1 year, 9 months ago on 27 July 2022 10:22

5/10

VIVA CRISTO REI!

A good movie

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Apparently, with 'Gangs of New York', it was another pet-project that Martin Scorsese struggled to make since the 70's. Anyway, even though I'm an atheist, I always thought that religion was and still is a fascinating subject so I was really eager to check this movie, despite its rather controversial reputation. Eventually, I thought it was a really interesting movie and I  especially enjoyed the fact that Jesus was portrayed as a human-being for once. At the end of the day, in spite of a few controversial things, it remains actually pretty faithful and, if you are rather open-minded about christianity and religion in general, there won’t be anything really shocking about this flick for you. More than 15 years later, Mel Gibson would come up with his own controversial take on Jesus with ‘The Passion of the Christ’ and even though it was a huge commercial success, it didn't really convince me and I actually prefer this version. To conclude, even though I don’t think it belongs to Martin Scorsese's best features, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in this subject or in  Martin Scorsese's work.

My temptation is for all who can to see this movie

Willem Dafoe plays Jesus in a movie about Jesus' crucifixion. This movie has the right title! This movie covers the last temptation of Christ!

My temptation is for all who can to see this movie! (should be fine for mature teens 13 and up) 'The Last Temptation of Christ' is something that you'll need to watch all off to understand the ending.

Spoiler alert: This is a big spoiler! Go to the next paragraph if you don't want to know what happens or unless you've seen the movie;

When Jesus (Dafoe) is on the cross, he is tempted by a young girl who claims to be his guardian angel (Juliette Caton) and she takes him down from the cross. Jesus is then cleaned up by Mary Magdalene (Barbara Hershey) who he marries but she dies before giving birth to a baby. Eventually as an old man, Jesus realises that to die on the cross would've saved the world. The "guardian angel" is revealed to be Satan and Jesus realises that he wants to die on the cross. When this movie took us back to Jesus near death on the cross, this movie made a lot of sense to me

This movie is very interesting, the temptation scene made a lot of sense in the end and I understood it. Willem Dafoe is great as Jesus and is well cast. The rest of the cast are also very good and Martin Scorsese's direction is brilliant! (it's an Oscar nominated direction by him)

This movie is rated 15 but it should be fine for mature teens 13 and up. Yeah, this movie is bloody but the only violent scenes are when Jesus takes out his heart (in a vision) and the whole crucifixion scene which gives you most of the details. But not recommended for anyone under 13!

This movie makes sense for the recommended audiences! Anyone under 13 should not understand it! If I’d seen this movie at 10 years old, I wouldn’t have understood it! So parents, don’t show this to your kids, wait until they’re 13 and then show them how amazing this movie is! What an inspiring movie!

Wow! What a controversial film. I find it quite enlightening, and very spiritual. Most likely my favorite film based on Jesus Christ.

The Last Temptation of Christ review

This is a highly ambitious, serious, and explorative film that in single scenes engages its material with a larger sense of wonder and reverence than the entirety of Mel Gibson's exploitive film ever could. In a disclaimer at the very onset of the film, Scorsese warns audiences that his film is not intended to be a retelling of one or any of the four gospels, but rather an artistic exploration of the dual nature most Christians attribute to Christ, of what the spiritual struggle may look or feel like for one who is fully human, and yet fully divine. Themes of sin, guilt, condemnation, redemtion and salvation are central to much of Scorseses' work and he is a proven master at sharing his stories of spiritual crisis on grand and epic scales, but also in ways that strike us and move us on personal and private levels. With Temptation, Dafoe gives us a Jesus that struggles, doubts, and truly suffers in his battle to accept and live his life as man, and as the human embodiment of God's will. His story is a fierce, tragic, and triumphant one, gritty and ugly in its pain and loneliness, serene and beautiful in its love and humility. Theologically this is a studious and brave effort that strives for meaning and larger understanding of one of the central tenants of the Christian faith. Cinematically this film is strong in many areas, but also a bit of a mess that invites questions about casting choices, pacing, and a rather episodic structure. Of the many that rose to the staggering challenge of making this film, Peter Gabriel deserves special mention for putting together one of the finest musical scores in cinema.

Hmmm... naa sorry, Martin. Could've been better...

I had high expectations for this film because it is a film from Martin Scorsese and it is one of the few Scorsese films that is a non-crime film and has drama within it. This film disappointed me quite a bit. The best things about this film were that it did show how horrifying Jesus' crucifixion really was to endure and to witness. The disappointments for me were that it dragged on a bit and went a bit boring. Also, I know the story of Jesus but i got a bit confused at times because there were an awful lot of events that occurred at around the same time. I was confused on the scene where Jesus was crucified and then his guardian angel came to him and she took him off the cross and he was alive but in the Bible he never came off the cross alive but the screen flashed to Jesus on the cross and he died at the end of it which was a bit weird. I will give this film credit for being underrated because i think most people choose to watch Mel Gibson's Passion Of The Christ over this one.

I have mixed feelings about Willem Dafoe as Jesus because he was powerful enough for the character but I could see him unfortunately as the Green Goblin/Norman Osborn. In this film he was very heroic and it showed how good Willem can be as a hero as well as a villain. If not Jesus in a biblical story then i think that he would have made a good Moses. I did still like him as Jesus though. Harvey Keitel was pretty crap as Judas because he didn't completely show how powerful Judas really was with Jesus and how badly he betrayed Jesus.

As I said, this is one of the few if not the only non-crime film that Martin Scorsese has directed. Scorsese goes drama just like he went comedy in King Of Comedy and like he went epic in Gangs Of New York. He directed this film really well which surprised me a lot. I was blown away by how Scorsese directed Jesus crucifixion. The script was adapted from the Bible which must have been really hard because the Bible is written in Latin which is like the old British language. It was still really good for that.

This is the underrated Scorsese film but it is my least favourite film from him not because it is the weakest but because it is a film that isn't typical Scorsese. There were some scenes within the film that were very confusing and was a bit too much in your face so to speak. Apart from that, a good film to watch. November
