I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but there was a decent cast involved and I thought it could be something interesting to watch with my wife. Well, to be honest, I really struggled to care about the damned thing though. I mean, Emilia Clarke was not bad at all and I really did appreciate that her character turned out to be fairly complex. Unfortunately, pretty much everything else was rather underwhelming. First of all, there were a couple of casting issues. Indeed, I keep seeing Henry Golding showing up during these last few years but, to be honest, he must be one of the most bland leading man I have seen and, in my opinion, he didn’t have much chemistry with Clarke. Furthermore, what was the added value of the family’s main character coming from ex-Yugoslavia, especially if, except for Boris Isakovic, none of the actors involved came from this country? At least, Michelle Yeoh was pretty good in this movie. Finally, I heard that the twist had been ruined by the trailer (something that already happened with ‘Terminator Genesys’, another movie starring Emilia Clarke) but, fortunately, I didn’t see this trailer. However, even without watching this trailer, to be honest, it was still fairly predictable anyway. Eventually, I remember, back in the 90’s, when Emma Thompson did win an Academy Award for writing the screenplay for ‘Sense and Sensibility’, many thought, including me, that it could be the start of an interesting side-career next to her actress job. Unfortunately, she was never really productive in this area and, above all, everything she did deliver afterwards in the writing department has been at best fairly uninteresting and this movie was another perfect example. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch and I guess I might be worth a look but only if you really like the genre though.
