Description: This disturbing film concerns the witch hunts and inquisition that sent many of the accused to their deaths in Moravia in the latter part of the 17th century. When a Catholic priest sees a woman hide a host, he speaks out against her. An inquisitor is coaxed out of retirement to investigate, and he seizes the opportunity for his own gain. Subsequent hordes of people from all walks of life are accused and their property is confiscated, making the greedy inquisitor rich. "March 31st Directed by: Otakar Vávra This almost plays out like a 15th century The Death of Stalin. Czech New Wave films are very sardonic and obviously allegorical for some goings-on in the government of the time, of which I have no idea, but it's really clear in the presentation there's a lot of bile behind the parody. Like most, the focus is very much on the story, and if you haven't seen the film I referenced earlier, the dark comedy comes from powerful figures bumbling through decisions "
