A good movie

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 1 July 2012 11:57

When I was about 16 years old, I saw Larry Clark's directing debut, 'Kids'. Even though it was heralded by the critics, I wasn't really convinced and I thought it gave a very stereotypical and annoying view of the youth. Still, he was definitely a talented filmmaker so I kept following his work trough the years. Many years later, I saw this flick which was even more controversial than 'Kids'. It is very explicit sexually with some non-simulated sex scenes and many people wouldn't be able to watch it (my wife, for instance, if she knew I watched it, she'd probably call me a f*cking pervert!). However, even though I thought it was very exploitative and voyeuristic, I thought that Larry Clark definitely grew as a director and there was much more nuances in his storytelling which was much appreciated. Basically, it is a merciless chronic about some youth who instead of smoking, drinking or taking some drugs, have some casual sex with each other of some adults to forget their miserable life. It is very bleak but I thought it was quite fascinating to watch. To conclude, it is obviously an acquired taste but if you don't mind dreary explicit sex scenes, it is definitely worth a look.

Extreme body

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2011 06:55

This is one of those movies that I suspect I saw too late, because the fact of the extreme body does not convince me at all, the narrative solutions seem obvious and narrative turnings predictable, and the external eye that tells the story, since he should be the protagonist's one, rather than discouraged or disillusioned or unknowingly stray it seems to me quite pleased and itchy (and, if you're asking, no, the matter is not sex, if it ever was); this makes it difficult to remember who is the narrator, which the director overwhelmingly seems to want to replace to, and makes it difficult to maintain the point of view ideally neutral or, paradoxically, 'pure' which seems to be declared at the beginning. So, I do not feel pain, I do not feel joy, and I can't even feel the squalor of the absence of both.
