An average movie
Posted : 10 years ago on 22 March 2014 10:39Ever since I saw the videoclip for ‘One More Time’ and I heard that Daft Punk made a full length feature in the same style, I became intrigued and was really eager to check the damned thing. Apparently, the guys from Daft Punk and myself are from the same generation and we all grew up watching those Japanese cartoons produced by Toei Animation. So, I can understand that it must have been a blast for them to work with Leiji Matsumoto, the guy who created ‘Space Pirate Captain Harlock', probably one of the best of those Japanese cartoons. Anyway, how was the damned thing eventually? Personally, I thought it was a nice watch, something you don’t see everyday but I can’t say I was really blown away. The point is that, when I was a kid, those cartoons really looked awesome but, 20 years later, this animation style, though it definitely has a retro charm, feels rather stiff and outdated. Furthermore, even though it was quite daring to put no dialogues and only some minimal sound effects, it made it difficult to invest yourself in the story and the characters involved. As a result, you get above all the feeling that you are watching a very long videoclip. Still, to concude, in spite of its flaws, it remains an original animated feature and I think it is definitely worth a look.

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem review
Posted : 10 years, 10 months ago on 24 June 2013 01:36What we have here is an overlooked gem of a movie. Not many people know that this movie exists, but they do remember "One More Time", the song that opens the movie. Rather than having dialogue tell the story, it is instead told through not only Daft Punk's songs, but through the actions made by the characters. It may be an hour long, but this may be the best hour of your life.
My rating: 8/10

Daft Punk musical
Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 16 July 2007 07:08**Contains spoilers**
I'm not really a fan of Daft Punk's music, and since this was basically just one of their albums with animated illustration forming a story, this wasn't exactly something I would normally go for, but I just like to see interesting animation in general and my boyfriend likes the music, so we watched it.
One thing I can say is that the music videos finally make sense after seeing this. I had only ever seen the first and fourth songs on TV ("One More Time" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" respectively) and even though the style was interesting, I had been thoroughly confused and thus a little put-off from wanting to watch them again. Seeing this film actually gives them a link and everything fits properly, albeit with a slightly odd storyline. The plot in general is quite good but at times I couldn't help snapping back to reality and scratching my head at the sheer absurdity of some sections (such as the taking over the world/Mozart and other musicians actually alien parts).
I've always thought the animation style was quite interesting but never have I considered it real anime (though I suppose it should be considered as such). It has a flair of individuality, and a departure from the generic anime style is always nice.
Anyway, to round off: If you like the music of Daft Punk, watch it as that is what it is (this is why I gave it a 6 as I am not really a fan). If you like sci-fi animation you also might like it. Otherwise it is completely up to you and your likes/dislikes.
