An average movie

Posted : 4 years ago on 31 March 2020 08:26

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Chloë Grace Moretz, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though the damned thing definitely had some potential, unfortunately, there were a couple of things that prevented this movie to really work for me, I’m afraid. The first thing that bothered me was that they pushed too much the idea of the super ‘cool’ parents. Seriously, I thought they were actually slightly annoying but, above all, not really believable. Fortunately, they didn’t put too much focus on the parents but a bigger issue, something that actually pretty much ruined the whole thing for me, was the back-and-forth chronology. Seriously, it is such an overused gimmick which shows that a writer doesn't really trust their story and therefore feels compelled to use this trick to make it more complex than it actually is. Anyway, it felt really useless in this movie. It’s too bad because Chloë Grace Moretz gave another solid performance here. Above all, I thought she had some really nice chemistry with Jamie Blackley and, together, they made not only a really cute couple but, above all, a realistic one. Indeed, for once, it was understandable why they would fall for each other (they were both some talented musicians) and even their conflict made sense (because they were both completely dedicated to their music career, they might have to live on different coasts), especially if you would compare it to the usual phony conflicts you get in this kind of movies. Seriously, without the back-and-forth chronology, it could have been actually really good. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

If I Stay review

I watched this movie two years ago, when it came out and rated it with 6/10, but then I decided to watch it again now and I don't exactly know why, but I liked it more. It "grew on me". It's one of those things that you feel, not think. I'm giving it a 7/10 now.

If I Stay review

This is director R.J. Cutler's first non-documentary style movie so it should be interesting to see how he fares. The plot isn't that original seeing as I have seen a movie called The Invisible which also deals with a dying teenager trying to figure things out. I have to admit the only real reason I'm interested in this is for Chloe Moretz. It seems like this movie didn't know what it wanted to be. I think it should have been a straight through kind of story instead of going back and forth. It feels all jumbled up taking away from itself when it switches from past to present. It would work if the flashback scenes made any sense to what is happening in the hospital. Why is she even narrating like nothing is happening? It just doesn't make any sense the way this is filmed and edited. If the book is this way too I can say I'm not interested in reading it. The acting is pretty good though of course. Mireille Enos seems like she belongs in a Rob Zombie movie. Every time I see her that's what her presence feels like to me. Anyways this was a cute movie that had some great heart felt moments. The ending however made me mad. Why did it end that way? That was really unfair and unrewarding. I was highly disappointed with this movie as a whole. It's a good love story, but otherwise it could have been much better than it was.

"If I Stay" (2014)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Mia Hall is left comatose after a car accident; caught between life and death, she has to decide whether to die or wake up again. As she wanders around the hospital, she overhears what happened to her family, and other discussions among her family and friends that guide her in her decision.
So, what kind of message are we supposed to take from this? That if you're half-dead, you can wander around freely and acquire knowledge for when you recover?
Also, the narrative structure is kind of offputting: a lot of it is told in flashback, and the flashback sections bear no relevance to the scene at hand, so it actually feels like a romantic drama that keeps getting interrupted by the hospital scenes.
The romance itself is kind of manipulative, too, in that the characters are pretty flat, not much personality.
…But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't invested. The film is just so heavy on mood and enthusiasm that it's hard not to start falling for it.
Plus you have Chloe Grace Moretz giving a predictably flawless performance.
So, overall, I think it's okay. It was certainly a welcome relief right after such a terrible movie as Lucy, but I have to wonder if I'd be so lenient under different circumstances.

My rating: 65%

Mia (Chloé Grace-Moretz) is put into a coma after a car crash and has an out-of-body experience, she must make a difficult decision. The Premise Sounds interesting on paper, "Ghost" for tweens, but the execution is surprisingly boring. The movie focuses more on the romance between Mia and her boyfriend, Adam (Jamie Blackley) than the out of body aspect, making it feel wasted as a result. Some of the characters are written unrealistically, like The Doctors who refuse to let Mia's friends visit her room for no good reason other than they're not her family. Chloé Grace-Moretz and the rest of the cast are good too, but If I Stay is a slow and sometimes boring romance that is for tween girls only, anyone else need not apply.
