"2019 Soderberg has a penchant for experimenting with style and dialogue. It's unsuccessful as much as it is successful. However, I think this movie falls right in the middle. It works as much as it doesn't. "

First Viewing Despite being a bit too cold and stagy for it's own good (Soderbergh's almost voyeuristic camera takes some of the emotion out of it, and the film is too reliant on two person face-offs), High Flying Bird is a smart and energetic examination of the ways that black men are often defined and exploited by sports. Soderbergh's direction is a bit too static for the material; this has nothing to do with the iPhone that he uses to shoot the film, or technology itself"

"First viewing - March 11th Of course I was going to watch the new Soderbergh as soon as I could get around to it. Dude's been on quite a nice streak since he decided to return to filmmaking, and High Flying Bird continues that run. The cast is fantastic all around, and even though I'm not a big basketball fan I was able to appreciate the story and how it plays out. I went into it knowing virtually nothing, which worked to its benefit and allowed me to fully meet the film on its own terms. Feel "
“To be honest, I actually lost interest in Steven Soderbergh a while ago but since his last directing effort was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be a typical Soderbergh effort, with the usual qualities and shortcomings inherent to his work. First of all, the guy has a talent to find some very interesting subjects for his movies and this one was not an exception. Furthermore, he usually get some strong actors and André Holland delivered here another solid performance. I was also impressed by Zazie Beetz who, after seeing her in only 2 movies, is already shaping to become one of the most interesting actresses in the business.
