A good try without the better performers, otherwis

Posted : 9 years, 5 months ago on 1 November 2014 12:24

You know what, the movie's visual effects were better than its actors. The acceptable stunts and graphics for a B movie, but the let down came from the performances. I don't know what happened to the director, he used to make the better movies in his early career and now he lost his way. Maybe the big stars don't believe in him that may lead him to recruit second stream actors.

The romance portions were too bad, no chemistry, physics, mathematics, nothing, but just an ordinary without the feelings. When it comes to the game of throne, that's looked okay as it scripted like 'snakes and ladders' game. Anyway, it was a well known story among most of us which was altered and told somewhat differently. Disappoint is there though still somehow watchable.

Don't force yourself for this, because you are not going to miss any masterpiece. It's becoming a habit in Hollywood, like I already mentioned in a review a year ago that two same thematic movies coming out of a same period. So this time Dwayne Johnson's movie wins the race, according to the ratings and reviews across the internet, but I still have to see it first before compare them both.

"The Legend of Hercules" (2014)

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 8 October 2014 01:29

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

To put it simply… this was bad! Really, really, really bad!
It's a retelling of the story of Hercules that imagines him as your typical Moses-like hero overthrowing a tyrant. It's as clichéd as it gets, and you can even pinpoint the famous historical epics it's blatantly ripping off. First it's 300, then it becomes Ben-Hur, then it becomes Gladiator, then it becomes every triumphant "people's hero" leader-type story you've ever seen before.
The first thing I noticed right away is that the CGI is awful! I mean, astonishingly bad! Some of the worst I've ever seen! The acting, too, crushes your spirit pretty quickly: every performance is so dull it's downright depressing.
On top of that, the only one of the famous twelve labours that's even remotely referenced is the Nemean lion. Even the Disney version had more to do with the legend than that!
On a minor note, when Hercules pulls down two stone pillars and starts swinging the stone blocks around on the ends of his chains, all I could think was, "Hulk SMASH!" :D ('Cos didn't he do something similar at one point in the Edward Norton movie?)
Overall, this is one of the most boring, derivative movies I've come across in quite a while. In terms of tradecraft, it's easily the worst movie I've seen so far this year… but it wasn't quite as frustrating as Lucy.

My rating: 20%

An average movie

Honestly, I wasn’t really interested by this flick but, Nick, my step-son, really wanted to see it so I bought the DVD for his birthday. Well, I think he thought it was decent but I didn’t like it much. I mean, I always had a weak spot for Renny Harlin’s work, he has made a couple of fun B features but it has been a while since he made something really entertaining. This time, he tried to make maybe his most ambitious movie so far but the whole thing was just an underwhelming copycat. Basically, visually, it was in the same style of ‘300’, which seems to have become the reference in this genre and, storywise, it was almost the same plot as in ‘Gladiator’. I mean, come on! Did they really think we wouldn’t notice?!? To throw Hercules in the mix, one of the most generic hero you can think of, was certainly not enough. Finally, Kellan Lutz might have the good body shape but his acting was rather poor and he definitely didn’t have enough charisma to carry this movie. To conclude, I think my rating might be actually quite generous here, it is a really weak movie and I don’t think it is really worth a look.

The Legend of Hercules review

I enjoy Kellan Lutz and Scott Adkins so despite the negative ratings I decided to watch this for myself. Also Spartacus is in this so that's another reason. He even almost could be considered almost the exact same character He even gets involved in a Gladiator-type situation after also being involved in the pits pretty much exactly how Spartacus started. He loses his wife to a politician who he worked for. I swear it's like Renny Harlin loved Spartacus so much he wanted to recreate it in his image albeit more lame than interesting. There is really nothing to write home about here. There are tons of cliches and it seems like a collage of 300, Spartacus, Hercules (Obviously), Game of Thrones, etc. etc. I mean it even had the slow motion action that is prominent in 300 and Spartacus. It also had this low budget feeling to it like in the cave fight scene. The fight scenes weren't anything really special. The acting wasn't that bad though. The ending was pretty lame. Some things were a bit questionable and were left unanswered. This had really nothing to offer. I recommend you pass this on this one.
