Good Will Hunting review

Posted : 10 months, 1 week ago on 21 June 2023 09:05

Conforme la estaba viendo pensé: "debería haberla visto antes" En realidad creo que me ha pillado en un momento perfecto para verla. Ciertamente es atemporal pero desde luego que en ciertas edades puede resonar mås.

Good Will Hunting es una maravilla de coming of age.

SĂșmale a Robin Williams y Stellan Skasgard.

Good Will Hunting review

I don't think I have been this moved by a movie in a while. Good Will Hunting is an incredible movie and if I had to say what I think is Gus Van Sant's best film, this would be it. It is a slow-burner, but I think this was purposefully done and it added to the film's poignancy and psychological aspect.

Good Will Hunting is a beautifully filmed movie with striking scenery, and it is directed wonderfully by Van Sant. The music is never obtrusive but never too low-key either, while the story is interesting and compelling and the script intelligently written.

The acting is one of the film's best assets, as well as its compellingly real characters. Robin Williams is superb in one of his best "drama" roles, while Ben Affleck has never been better and Matt Damon gives another fine performance to match his performance in The Talented Mr Ripley. Minnie Driver is also quite touching and believable.

All in all, an incredible movie. 10/10 Bethany Cox

It's the only movie I didn't like with Robin Williams, because I don't like Matt Damon But it's only my opinion...

Overrated, but still good

Overrated, but still good. 'Good Will Hunting' focuses on Will Hunting (Matt Damon) who after assaulting a policeman, he goes to see a therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams) and studies advanced mathematics with Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard).

'Good Will Hunting' is good but is it really that great? The start actually seems quite obvious but afterwards, the concept of the plot was actually pretty good and eventually it worked very well!

Good Will Hunting

No disrespect is intended to the perfectly fine script that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck cooked up, but I think the real Best Original Screenplay Oscar should have went to Boogie Nights. But let’s focus in on Good Will Hunting. The script is great in building intimate, character-driven moments that play off believably and beautifully, and it effectively evokes the language and atmosphere of South Boston, but it paints in too broad of strokes that signal exactly where the characters journeys are going to wind up by the time we fade to black. Still, it’s not a grave injustice, and it’s not hard to see why the Academy was won over by the film.

But the real joy in Good Will Hunting is the assured, committed and heartfelt performances in the four lead roles. Matt Damon proved himself to be quite a talented actor, and his resume keeps expanding with a nice combination of movie star turns and more challenging material. Minnie Driver has rarely had quite so engaging a performance as she does here. She’s by turns tough, brainy, sexy and utterly charming, a beacon of light and hope for Damon’s character amongst the poverty and overnights in jail. Ben Affleck is a little hit-and-miss, but there’s a monolog late in the film in which he details his hopes for Damon that is pretty touching and extraordinary. You can sense a lifetime of friendship and a deep bond between these two without them ever truly making eye contact, and he then proceeds to dispense tough love and harsh words while making sure it is coming from a place of love and concern. Is Robin Williams the best performance in the film? Quite possibly, but it’s hard to say. He’s certainly fully immersed in the quiet pain of this man, and he sprinkles the role with tiny details here and there in his dialog that give the sense of a life fully lived and a spirit being entombed by his grief. His scenes with Damon are very touching for the fatherly way he takes to this boy, and how he breaks protocol yet continues to see him as a therapist in a way to help himself. It’s great work.

Sure the story is essayed from the moment all of the main players converge – he will eventually grow up and mature, he will go and get the girl, everything will work out correctly in the end – but it doesn’t entirely matter. What makes Good Will Hunting so satisfying a movie is that it has a big heart, and it uses it to illuminate the healing of a damaged soul. That is surrounds itself with so authentic a portrait of South Boston and lets its characters speak in their natural rhythms and doesn’t try to force them into “movie character speak” is fantastic. It’s well-trod territory for certain, but there’s enough character, beauty in the specified vernacular and a wounded but beating heart at its center.

An overrated movie

Posted : 10 years, 7 months ago on 22 September 2013 08:10

Personally, I never understood what was the fuss about this flick but since it has always been so popular (it is even in the Imdb top 250), I thought I should give it another shot. First of all, it was just really fun to see it again after such a long time, to see both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck when they were still fresh and young and so eager to break through. Still, I’m afraid my opinion remained the same and, personally, I think it is one really overrated feature. Basically, it is just a really standard inspirational drama, no more no less, and it is pretty much the most straightforward movie ever directed by Gus Van Sant (unsurprisingly, it has been his most successful movie at the box-office so far). Take for example Robin Williams, the guy won an Academy award for his performance when, in fact, even though he did a decent job, it was just the typical gimmick he gives in his dramas. Concerning Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, they were actually pretty good and I liked how conflicted Will Hunting was but it wasn’t enough to make this movie really brilliant. I mean, I have to admit, it remains a well made drama but the whole thing was just way too predictable and pedestrian for my taste. To conclude, even though it is not bad at all and actually highly watchable, I think it is pretty damned overrated but it is still worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Good Will Hunting review

It would be very difficult to view Good Will Hunting without being unmoved. Most everyone associated with this film have gone to even bigger hights. I'm very touched that Matt & Ben where recognized for their artistic merit so early in their lives!

Where There's a Will...

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 5 July 2010 06:06

Wait, what's this? The usually overblown Mork wins an Oscar for his portrayal of a down to earth South Boston therapist with a sympathetic ear?
Well, how do you like them apples?

And on the other end of the psychiatrist's chair is Will Hunting, a "wicked smaht" young Southie who must come to terms with his past, his brawling behavior, his therapist, his extra-ordinary talent and his tendency to continually talk himself away from responsibility.
And in the process, finds that sometimes, the best way to heal old wounds,
is simply, to go see about a girl.

This was one of those films that really surprised me when I watched it,
not just because it turned out to be my favorite movie of that year, but also one of my favorite top ten films ever.
And if any of you out there reading this can't seem to come eye to eye with my over-all assessment of the high quality of this story,
fret not.
It's not your fault.

Affleck and Damon's script is enough to get you to watch the film but Robin Williams' powerhouse performance is enough to get you to stay right until the end. A fantastic drama with real heart.
Nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning two - Best Supporting Actor (Robin Williams) and Best Original Screenplay (Affleck and Damon). Starring Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Ben Affleck, Minnie Driver, Stellan Starsgard, Casey Affleck and Cole Hauser.
