A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 7 months ago on 26 September 2010 08:43

I remember it quite well, at one of my previous jobs, I was discussing movies with a colleague and, according to him, I should really check some Danish movies, including this one. To be honest, I don’t think I was completely blown away like my colleague was but I thought it was still pretty good. Above all, the cast and especially Mads Mikkelsen gave some very good performances and the directing was solid as well. I don’t know, I guess the story was interesting enough but it didn’t completely work for me. I mean, even though it was a strong story, I still think that the whole thing was rather far-fetched and, therefore, I wasn’t really able to take it completely seriously. Eventually, a couple of years ago, Susanne Bier would get the opportunity to work on ‘Serena’, a really ambitious project starring both Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, easily two of the most in-demand actors right now, but eventually, the whole thing turned out to be a huge failure, commercially and critically. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, in spite of its flaws, it remains a very good drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Danish movies.

Not everything is "rotten in Denmark".

A thought provoking and emotionally absorbent film. By the end of the film you'll be questioning your own choices in life. It doesn't matter to me what language Mads Mikkelsen is speaking in a film, his face and mannerisms are an international language of their own.

A man, Jacob (Mikkelsen) currently living in India and educating Indian children is requested to go to Denmark. He is supposed to meet Jørgen (Rolf Lassgård) who will provide him with funds to help his orphanage survive. What Jacob will find is a secret that will change his life, quite simply, forever.

Good points for the cast, the acting performances, the script and photography.
It is unfortunate that the movie went on and on, and was just too slow to fully enjoy.

Worth watching if you have the patience to wait for the ending.
