A good movie

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 3 September 2016 03:43

I have noticed that this movie tends to be rather underrated  but, I have to admit it, it is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. Indeed, just a year after ‘The Truman Show’, they tried to release another movie dealing with this new TV hype, the ‘reality TV’ shows (it is difficult to believe that, after all these years, this garbage is still very much present and ruling the current TV landscape). Even though this movie was obviously not as deep as ‘The Truman Show' was,  I thought it still gave a pretty good insight about how misguided these shows can be and, if you consider where we stand today, it was actually rather prophetic. Of course, as usual with Ron Howard, there was an obvious lack of ambition to make something really amazing but I thought it was quite entertaining. In fact, I re-watched the damned thing recently and I still think it is actually a pretty good movie. Indeed, some of the dialogues didn't really work but most of it felt actually rather genuine. Even the short episode involving Elizabeth Hurley showed how fake these shows can be and it felt pretty accurate. Eventually, one issue was that the whole problem concerning Ed and Shari's relationship felt really bogus. I mean, couldn't she wait a few months until he got off the show to move on with their relationship? Also, Ed was maybe too good to be true and anyone chosing to be involved in this circus would never leave it at the peak of its success, especially when they are offered tons of money to stay on the air. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, I really have a weak spot for the damned thing and I think it is definitely worth a look.
