A bad movie

To be honest, I have never understood the appeal of this movie but, on the other hand, it has been a while since I saw it so maybe I should give it a 2nd chance. In fact, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Back then, out of nowhere, Jim Carrey took over the box-office following ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’ and ‘The Mask’ and this movie would be his 3rd box-office hit all during 1994. Since I enjoyed both ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’ and ‘The Mask’, I was quite eager to check this movie and I was expecting it to be seriously hilarious. Well, eventually, it turned out to be a massive disappointment, that’s for sure. Of course, I fully understand that this movie was supposed to be dealing with some really stupid characters but, as far as I was concerned, I thought it was seriously cringe-inducing to behold and I can’t recall a single moment when I thought I was watching something really hilarious. The Farelly brothers would manage to strike gold again with ‘There's Something About Mary’ (another rather overrated comedy in my opinion) but most of their following movies would eventually under-perform at the box-office. Anyway,  coming back to our main feature, I think it is one of the most overrated comedies ever made and I don’t think it is really worth a look.

Much dumber and nastier than it is funny

'Dumb & Dumber' tries to be funny and instead it appals me! It stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as two dumb friends who do crude, unfunny things through most of the movie!

There are a few funny moments but most of the moments in the movie are unfunny and/or nausceating! And I'm talking about Lloyd (Jim Carrey) when he fights a waiter and bites him in the crotch and then fights a chef, rips out his heart and puts it in a bag! The idiot friends even sell a blind boy a dead parrot! Not funny! Just cruel! Lloyd even urinates in lots of bottles and the police confiscates it. He then drinks the urine in front of them and then says "Get out!"

Even though I love the dog resembling car, 'Dumb & Dumber' is indeed dumb! Much dumber and nastier than it is funny!

"Dumb and Dumber" (1994)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

I surprisingly really liked this movie. I went in expecting nothing dignified – I knew full well it was going to be stupid – but this movie seemed like it was having so much fun being stupid that it transcended my usual bias against that sort of humour.
This also applies to the two main characters – who I think are the main reason why the movie works so well. Obviously they're complete idiots, but with a childlike naïveté; nothing they do is malicious. Even when Lloyd does seemingly terrible things like give a dead parakeet to a blind orphan, he's just unaware of the trauma that he's potentially causing. Also, some people might point more towards Ace Ventura, but I view this as Jim Carrey at his funniest.
There's not even as much low-brow humour as I was expecting – only a small handful of bodily waste-related gags, in fact.
The only part I really didn't like was whenever they tried talking to ladies: that was just cringe-worthy. The kidnapping plot itself never quite added up for me, either.
But on the whole, all I can say is this is one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time.

My rating: 80%

Dumb and Dumber review

For better or worse, Dumb and Dumber IS the definition of a 90's classic comedy. I for one, love it, and you won't find me apologizing one bit. It's outrageous, inane, and yes, utterly stupid at times. But I think even the most cynical would be forced to agree that it is not without it's certain charms. One of the things that makes this movie so succussful as a comedy is that it goes all out for the laugh with such committment and sincerity. Carey and Daniels seem to really push each other, neither one wanting to be upstaged. If this was a comedic battle between two lesser talents this would spell a nightmare for the audience. But luckily these are two very gifted actors so in the end the audience benefits greatly from it all. And for those who say this movie is lacking in plot/story, they're only partially right. There IS a fair amount of heart to this film, buried beneath the jokes, mostly to do with the friendship between Harry and Lloyd and the challenges that friendship faces. Think what you will about this one, but I say Dumb and Dumber brightens the landscape of American Comedy.
