Dragonball Evolution review

Posted : 4 years, 4 months ago on 30 November 2019 09:52

If you are a Dragon Ball fan I recommend ya to not watch it but if you must watch it, prepare yourself a medal afterwards. Said medal should be hidden away in some other 'planet'. I find appalling how Toriyama let his name be associated with this million dollar mess, I would sue 20th Century Fox ^^ (I'm sure someone would create some fund to help the 'efforts' XD).

Dragonball Evolution review

Dragonball Evolution review

This film is not as bad as what others make it out to be, but it definitely lacked a few things to make it a compelling film. Still, I enjoyed this creative adaption.

Hollywood is ruining my childhood memories!

Watching DBE i can immediately tell the directors and everyone else involved have not watched more than a few episodes of the entire Dragonball series. The characters are only similar in name and the story feels like they chewed it up and spit it out and whatever stuck to the storyboard they went with. I wont ruin the story but its nothing like the anime, as i said before the characters are only similar to the anime by name. It almost seems like they wanted to make this movie as bad and as far away from the original story as they could. The only time an actor or actress acts like their anime counterpart is when they are first introduced speaking mainly about Master Roshi and Yamcha.

For one of the most action packed animes around they sure did the opposite with the movie. I can count the number of fight scenes with one hand and count how long they lasted with two hands. Its pretty pathetic when the first fight scene with Goku and the "bullies" is the best and he never threw even threw a punch. The big screen debut of the Kamehameha is sad and pathetic and all the Ki blasts look like different color fire balls. They don't look pure energy (like they are in the anime) but just like slow motion fire.

I could go on for hours about what they did wrong. If you have never seen the anime series don't watch the movie. The story is probably too confusing for anyone who doesn't know the entire back-story of the anime. The movie only gives you the who and the what but no why. In fact i think why sums up the entire movie. Why did they do this and why did they do that is all i was thinking during the entire movie. At the end of the movie all i could do was ask "Why did they make this movie and who did they make this movie for?" This is not a movie for the fans or anyone who has never seen the anime. It feels like they made this movie for the people who hate the anime.

As a fan of the series I will award this no points and may god have mercy on their souls.

AND
This movie is just plain disappointing to say the least. I don't care if this is an adaptation of Dragonball. I don't understand what was wrong with the original storyline that needed to be changed and messed with. It's the original storyline that made fans love Dragonball in the first place. "If it ain't broke don't fix it." I think this movie would do a lot better if they stuck with the original story and had better casting. The real fans would flood the theaters to watch it which would bring hype to the movie for new viewers that don't know about Dragonball, kind of like how Watchmen did. Street Fighter was horrible and they expect to do a sequel to it, this movie was a travesty...I guess next up will be Thundercats and Voltron for Hollywood to mess up for me. Thank you Hollywood for ruining my childhood memories.

Dragonball Evolution review

Best comedy, ever!

I know it isn't but from the very beginning, I found the film very much unintentionally hilarious.

Yes, I know that the TV series, had their moments of humor, but the live action takes it to the next level.

A direct comparison, would be Super Mario Bros and Double Dragon, both awesomely bad, and both worth checking out if you like really horribly awful, but yet entertainingly horribly bad movies films, this film definitely belongs way up there with them.

A bad movie

Obviously, since the reviews for this movie were just terrible, I had some really low expectations concerning the damned thing. In spite its really lame reputation, I still wanted to check it out since I loved the cartoon when I was a child (in fact, I even saw the very first episode of ‘Dragon Ball’ when it was aired on the French television). Well, even though many people complained about Michael Bay for virtually raping their childhood with the ‘Transformers’ franchise, compared to what they did with this movie, you could say that Bay didn’t do so bar after all. Indeed, in this case, the whole thing was just plain bad. In fact, I have to admit that the story was actually rather faithfull to the cartoon but the dialogues were ridiculous and the special effects were just pathetic. One of the worst thing was the fact at the movie started like an average standard high-school comedy?!? Seriously, how did they come up with this idea? That was just so lame. To conclude, even though I do believe that they were some decent ideas here and there, the end-result was still pretty boring, ugly and not entertaining whatsoever so the whole thing is definitely not worth a look whatsoever.

Decent

Wow, not bad. I'm basing my judgment by anime to live-action adaption standards, mind you. Jamie Chung (Chi Chi) being cute as a button doesn't hurt either. Definitely not a disaster.

For all the changes they made (the movie was adapted from the manga, technically), it was still pretty faithful to the source.

Chow Yun-fat seemed to be enjoying himself playing the goofball Master Roshi; channeling all the comedies he did in the eighties, perhaps. James Marster was good, and he wasn't exactly lost under the make-up, but there wasn't really that much to do with the role of Piccolo except glower. He glowered well. Emmy Rossum as Bulma was suitably feisty. Justin Chatwin's Goku wasn't chipper enough (plenty angsty, though), but otherwise he was fine.

The fights were alright. They were mostly a mixture of wire-work, cgi and acrobatics; there were some more normal (for Dragonball) choreographed fights, too . What I saw more or less matched my expectations for the material.

If you have any kind of fondness for Dragonball, it's worth checking out.

Dragon Fall

Posted : 14 years, 12 months ago on 2 April 2009 11:05

It's called evolution because it's not exactly the same as the Tv Series. We see its main character - Goku - studying at school, with troubles with his classmates. That can be offensive for any fan of the TV series, but Dragonball Evolution must be analyzed for its own. And it's a ridiculous movie that could be considered a mix between Shaolin Soccer and Volcano High. But in this movie there's no fun, no good action scenes, and the special effects may have been created by a newbye with Adobe AfterEffects.
Moreover, the story is quite silly. Everything that was interesting in the Tv series has been pulled out, and the new script has added things like an eclipse or an story about a "chosen".
The TV series fans will feel dissapointed and insulted, but any other spectator will walk out of the cinema asking who are those characters disguised like retro-fashion victims... and why that green guy wants to destroy things.
