The one that started it all....

I am a fan of the series, though I do have to admit there are some bad eggs and some golden treasures. Dr No is one of the golden treasures, along with Goldfinger and From Russia with Love. Dr No also happened to start this great series off, and with great style and panache. It is very cleverly conceived, and remains true to the essence of the novels. The cinematography and locations are stunning, and the music and theme song are wonderful. The action sequences are simply terrific, the atmosphere is appropriately exotic and the humour displayed is very witty. The dialogue is great, the plot is well done and the direction is solid. Ursula Andress couldn't have asked for a better entrance, while the ever suave and charismatic Sean Connery is perfect as the dashing, debonair and ruthless title character. Overall, a great start to a great series on the whole. 10/10 Bethany Cox

A classic

By now, I have seen all the James Bond instalments, sometimes, even several times, but to be honest, most of them are actually rather forgettable and I would have a rather hard time to really recall most of them in details. However, there are a few exceptions and this first instalment is definitely one of them. Indeed, back then, they had their lowest budget so it was probably not the most elaborate instalment but it was understandable since the formula was new at the time. They still managed to already introduce many elements that they still use more than 50 years later. Indeed, the whole concept of the James Bond girl started here with the gorgeous Ursula Andress and it would always be a great challenge for many actresses to fill in her shoes (most of them would ultimately fail). Dr. No would be also a really memorable villain and the blueprint for many other villains that would come later on in this franchise. And, of course, the ultimate masterstroke was James Bond himself. I mean, right from the start, he became one of the most iconic characters and even though many believed that Sean Connery was a poor choice (even Ian Fleming himself), he was just awesome giving this character many of his most famous trademarks. To conclude, even though it was maybe not a masterpiece, it remains one of the best James Bond flicks and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.ย

A good movie

'Dr. No' is just the start of the very long running 'James Bond' film franchise. It starts with Sean Connery, who gives a very good performance as the main character James Bond himself. He is joined by a supporting cast including Ursula Andress and Joseph Wiseman as the titular antagonist Dr. No

'Dr. No' is something I will give credit for, in starting the iconic bleeding screenshot image and the amazing classic spy music! The film features very good acting and music and some decent action! I'm going to try and watch all the James Bond movies, of which there are many. I prefer 'Skyfall' to this one but this one is still pretty good!

Dr. No (1962) review

Posted : 10 years, 12 months ago on 30 April 2013 09:59

As an avid Bond fan, and seeing this film when it was first released, it will always hold a special place in my heart.
The action starts when Bond is summoned from his late night at the Casino and women, to fly to Jamaica to sort out the the problems of missing British agents and staff.
He encounter an hostile reception especially from Dr No's co-horts who are trying to stop him reaching Dr No's island.
The story is a fairly simple on - get Dr No - and the pace and action of the film are supberb from Director Terence Young.
The atmoshere of Jamaica, the girls, the car chase sequence and the build up to the explotion of Dr No's Island base were to become the staple diet of a number of Bond films, and in particular, the Sean Connery and Roger Moore era of Bond.
This film set a winning formula for audiences and some, like me, were hooked from the very beginning and wanted more of the action as each film was released.
I cannot end the review without mentioning Usula Andress as Honey Ryder and her entrance into the story by walking out of the sea in the teriffic bikini she almost wore.
While the film lacked some of the finesse and cadgets of the later Bond films, I found the non-use of gadgets more appealing as brute force was needed more by Bond in this film than the later ones.
An enjoyable watch to anyone who has not seen this film.
8.5/10
