An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 24 September 2014 08:47

At first, I thought it would be great to have a new modern adaptation of this novel since it is one of my favorite books. However, pretty quickly, my excitement diminished for this movie. Indeed, when I heard that Ben Barnes was playing the title character, I became disillusioned about the whole thing. Even though Barnes has indeed a pretty face, I doubted he could portray the devilish Dorian Gray and I'm afraid I was right. At least, I have to admit it, he did try but that was hardly enough and it felt like watching a little lamb trying to pretend that he is actually a wolf. On top of that, even though the whole thing looked pretty good and convincing, they didn't get the tone right. The only actor who really stood out was Colin Forth who managed to do a lot with very little since his character was not very well developed either. Eventually, it wasn't really awful but I was actually rather bored during the whole thing which was quite something since I actually loved the story it was based on. To conclude, it wasn't a complete failure but it is still a weak adaptation and I don't think it is really worth a look.

Dorian Gray

"Pleasure is very different from happiness."
Dorian Gray a remake from the 1970 flick with the same name has a great premise and an interesting plot to keep you engaged to some extent, but the shoddy screenplay gives it away or should I say throws it away.

Its about the price a guy pays for the eternity of youth as he barts his soul to his portrait. As he transform from a decent well mannered boy to a corrupt and evil man(?) his decaying and rotten soul starts to show up in his portrait.

The film has its share of moments but misses serious logic behind every move the protagonists take and besides the script took a very simplistic turn when it was due for more.

The film has been very well shot, the acting is good. But at the end of it we just get an average one when the promises were much higher.

"Something are more precious because they dont last"

Dorian Gray review

Oh, to be able to commit all of the seven deadlies over and over and over again without one thought toward the consequences. To be able to keep the beauty of youth forever. Would it be worth bargaining your soul? According to Mr. Gray, it would be...or at least placing his soul in a portrait that will take on all of the consequences of his actions and the destruction of age while he plummets into the deepest depths of debauchery.

That much of the plotline is based on the Oscar Wilde novel. Unfortunately, Parker seems to also have tried to delve into the dark mind of our protagonist just as well as Wilde does in the novel...with some unsuccessful results. While Ben Barnes is certainly attractive enough to pass as a period piece hearthrob, I just wasn't drawn to any other aspect of his character.

I expected a spark in the eyes of a young naive boy--enough of a spark to make an artist fall in love with him and put himself into a painting! I didn't get it. I expected a man so totally absorbed inside himself and his pleasure that nothing around him mattered. What I got instead were corny slow motion flashes of orgies. I expected the torture of the years of greif that haunted him to show in the actors face, and instead, I was given a lot of shots of Barnes trying on different supermodel faces. I just couldn't feel for this character at all.

All in all, I'm giving it 5 stars for being originally from Oscar Wilde, and for showing us some literature on the big screen, but I'm also going to suggest that Mr. Barnes sticks to making the films that don't require deep thought...keep that pretty face free from wrinkles.
