“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be pretty neat, that’s for sure. First of all, I have noticed that many viewers considered it as a coming-of-age story which was maybe the case but I thought it gave above all a very interesting look on the hood genre. Indeed, the best movies in this genre like ‘Boyz n the Hood’ or ‘Menace II Society’ were quite impressive but also terribly bleak and even rather depressing. Here, Rick Famuyiwa went back to this genre but managed somehow to remove its typical dreary mood and made something that was entertaining and fun but still really realistic and compelling to watch. Seriously, the whole thing was really well done and subtle and it is hard to beli” read more
" DVD- 1hr. 44min. First Viewing A funny and surprisingly fresh take on the coming-of-age story, Dope works thanks to several excellent insights about growing up in the inner-city and a star making performance from Shameik Moore. While it does suffer from several of the same problems that plague many of it's ilk, the film is able to twist so many of the old cliches and wring something new and funny out of them. "
"This is a very good coming-of-age movie. The main character is Malcolm, a high-school senior who's obsessed with 90's hip-hop culture, and who constantly shows this affection by emulating the fashion and language of the time. He's a straight-A student with perfect SAT scores and seems to have everything under control - despite a few bullies - until he finds himself taking a chance invitation to a drug dealer's birthday party along with his two best friends. From there, he's taken on a crazy adve"
" 8.0/10 Three definitions of the word 'dope' are fulfilled in this genuine, crafty comedy/drama about being a geek off the street. A great pace, tension, and ending make this a memorable one for the genre, not to mention the notable, mostly unknown, cast lead by Shameik Moore."

"March 12, 2016 Watched on Netflix First Time Viewing Netflix Instant Project 2016 Recommended by the giraffe This movie honestly surprised me. I was not really that impressed by the trailers for this film. Didn't help that it starred the annoying kid from the god-awful "Incredible Crew". " Such a pleasant, fun surprise. The cast is stellar, the presentation of the story is fresh & engaging, and the soundtrack had me bumping old-school hip-hop for a few days after I watched it. The energy of this film is so infectious I fell in love with it & I can't wait to hang out with these characters again & again over the years."
