An average movie

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should give it another chance at some point.  Back in the 80’s , there was a new French wave of directors called the ’Cinéma du Look’ with Luc Besson, Léo Carax and Jean-Jacques Beineix. Besson is obviously the one who had the biggest critical and definitely commercial success and Beineix probably the one who got t... read more

Jean-Jacques Beineix’s Diva is all impeccably detailed frames, cool, smooth surfaces awash in bold colors like pinks and whites and wrapped up in moody lighting and scoring. The details of the plot are inconsequential and preposterous as they merely exist to serve the mood of the piece. Jean-Jacques Beineix’s hyper-stylish cult thriller follows a young postman (Frédéric Andréi) as he is ensnared in a sinister conspiracy involving two secret recordings: one an illicit tape of an opera singer whose voice has never been recorded, the other the bombshell confessions of a murdered sex worker. Marrying a whiz-bang comic-book plot with a dazzling, pop-art visual style, DIVA became an art-house sleeper sensation that announced the arrival of the ultra-cool cinéma du look movement in French film.

“Jean-Jacques Beineix’s Diva is all impeccably detailed frames, cool, smooth surfaces awash in bold colors like pinks and whites and wrapped up in moody lighting and scoring. The details of the plot are inconsequential and preposterous as they merely exist to serve the mood of the piece. Diva is not about what happens in the story but about the act of watching it and its sustained tone.   There’s a postman fan of opera who crafts a bootleg of his favorite diva, an artist who has refused to record her voice, and winds up getting caught between Taiwanese bootleggers, crooked cops, a kleptomaniac and her philosopher roommate, and a dead prostitute. Except for the opera diva, these details are pure unadulterated noir, and Diva often reconstitutes that genre’s visual textures into the ” read more

"French thriller about a postman's obsession with an opera diva who refuses to record her work, while he makes a bootleg copy which becomes the centre of a mix-up with an incriminating tape and those who want the diva's recording. A complex, often muddled thriller that relies on style over substance but a few decent set pieces and a beautiful soundtrack has made this a cult favourite."

"28.7. Ihan symppiksillä päähenkilöillä varustettu kulttifilmi kompastuu aivan susipaskaan rikosjuoneen, jossa kansainvälistä rikollisrinkiä esittää kolme ihmistä, joista kaksi vetää samalla tavalla kuin pääpahiksen kehariapurit Robin Williams -lastenkomediassa. Leffassa on aivan liikaa jekuttelua eikä parituntinen kestokaan ilahduta."

Besson is obviously the one who had the biggest critical and definitely commercial success and Beineix probably the one who got the least success of the trio. Anyway, since this directing debut had a solid reputation, at least, in France, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, even though it was visually pretty neat and even though I did like the tone, I had a rather hard time to care about the story and the characters involved. That was apparently the main thing about the  ’Cinéma du Look’, those filmma” read more
