One of Clint Eastwood's best movies

Posted : 2 years ago on 22 March 2022 09:32

If there was a category for quintessential crime thrillers, I would almost certainly put Dirty Harry in that category. Everything about Dirty Harry is wonderful. The cinematography is fine and the locations and scenery are quite striking. Lalo Schifrin's music sets the atmosphere very well too, while the story is taut, the script is quotable and cleverly written, Don Siegel's direction is superb and the violence is shocking and daring. The acting is also great, in his more complex roles Clint Eastwood was born for the role of Dirty Harry, and all the supporting roles are very well played. All in all, brilliant and one of the crime thrillers there is. 10/10 Bethany Cox

A classic

Even though I have watched many times the Spaghetti Westerns starring Clint Eastwood when I was a kid with my dad, I discovered his Dirty Harry flicks much later on in my life. Eventually, even though I still prefer his Westerns, I still enjoyed his famous cop features as well. The interesting thing with this franchise is that the sequels were actually pretty decent but, obviously, this first installment was the only one which became a real classic. Indeed, Harry Calahan must be one of the most notorious police characters ever created, very often copied but never matched. At the time, Clint Eastwood was pretty much in control of his career. He picked up 4 different drafts of the script (one written by no one else than Terrence Malick). made sure that Don Siegel was hired to direct this movie and he was also responsible for hiring Andy Robinson to play Scorpio. When it was released, it was a critical and commercial success but there was also some controversy as it displayed and almost glorified police brutality. Basically, the Scorpio killer was pretty messed up and, eventually, Harry Calahan was not much better, he just happened to be on the right side of the law. To conclude, I really enjoyed this flick, it is a classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Great start to the franchise

One of Clint Eastwoods most iconic roles, this being the start on the franchise, arguably as famous as his western roles. The franchise that spawns so many great quotes. Its the origional Dirty Harry and Harry has to chase down some scumbag who threatens and kills innocent people including young children. The crazy scumbag gets to taste Harry's .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, quite a few times, before eventually being asked if he feels lucky, I guess he did because he tries to grab his gun....obviously wasn't his lucky day afterall, punk.
My favourite moment being when Harry chops down the badguy, who's trying to escape across a football field, with a single shot from his famous .44 magnum.
This films earns a 9/10, with the entire franchise getting an 8/10 from me.

Eastwood classic!

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 10 March 2010 04:46

I was literally blown away by how good this film turned out to be. I knew I was going to love this film because I really love seeing Clint Eastwood playing that total kick-ass character and a film with such a great story to it. I found the story of Dirty Harry very similar to films like Heat and The Dark Knight. Not because of the main character because main character in all three are totally different but it was mostly the fact that all three are about a particular killer who is held fugitive within one city and never seems to get caught. Also, they sweep themselves around and always get away with crimes they commit. The characters I mean are Scorpio (Dirty Harry), The Joker (The Dark Knight) and Neil McCauley (Heat). When you watch all three of them or two of them or if you already have, you will see what I mean. Dirty Harry truly is one of those few kick-ass motion pictures that people would call a classic even now after 30 years.

I didn't think I would like any other Clint Eastwood character than The Man With No Name but I think Harry Callahan is my favourite character from him now. Not only was it typical of Clint to play that sort of character but also because of how Clint approaches the character and how he shows how well the character is developed as we gradually go through seeing the character in the film. He also made me laugh a lot which Clint Eastwood doesn't really do for me. I know he isn't a comedy actor but its what he looks like when he plays these sorts of characters but I mean it in a black comedy sort of way of course. He was very entertaining because Harry is one of those characters that everyone would love for just being the way they are. He is probably the perfect example of a bad cop character and with a very dark personality for his profession. I could not believe how much resemblance there is between Andrew Robinson and Malcolm McDowell (man who plays Alex DeLarge in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange). What makes them so similar is that in those days, they had long thick brown/greyish hair. They both have similar voices and they both play similar sorts of characters. The only difference between the two of them is that Malcolm McDowell is British and Andrew Robinson is American. What I really loved about Scorpio's character is that he has a very funky, cool name for a serial killer. That name shows that he doesn't have a proper name and shows how twisted he is especially killing innocent and random victims within the city. He shows that slight innocent look and always prays for mercy when he is caught but he always seems to look like a real thug and to be a real identical killer in which he is anyway.

The director knew how to make the characters within the film very gripping and how he wanted the audience to realise what each one of them were capable of. They were both villains in a way but Harry is a hero as well as a villain (only a little as far as killing thugs, burglars etc). The action scenes and the epic thrill rides are another close similarity when comparing The Dark Knight and Heat with Dirty Harry. Don Siegel directed this a lot like Chris Nolan and Michael Mann did. The script was awesome! Sometimes I find it rather hard to see whether a script is awful or amazing but it really depends on the scenes. I feel the same with actors when they portray their characters.

This is definitely one of the top action thrillers of the 1970s if not one of the best of that decade. It is my favourite Clint Eastwood film as an actor but not as director. I prefer Clint as a director than an actor but still really talented at both. Masterpiece!! Clint's Harry Callahan is one of my top kick ass characters of all time but not one of my favourite characters ever though. This is a cool classic that shouldn't be avoided for anything in the world.

'You've gotta ask your self a question. Do I feel Lucky? Well, do ya ... punk'
I only just saw this for the first time a while ago, i knew i had to watch it, it being such a classic.

Its full of action and suspence. Which is my type of movie.
Its a really freaky story actually, that the badie (i forgot his name) would do such things. you know what i say ... those poor school kids!

Now for Clint Eastwood! Classic actor! I havnt seen him in much movies but i guess this is his most well known role as dirty harry and certainly his best!
Because This movie is so old I really don't know any of the other actors in this movie, but whoever they were, they did great!

When watching this movie you kinda have to realise the time it was made in order to respect the special effects. Apparently it was like the best thing when it first came out, so it really makes you think when you realise these special effects were amazing for its time!
It is a classic movie, truly, its kinda like 'see it or die'.
If you havnt already seen this then wake up, get out there and see it! classic action adventure for pure entertainment from start to finish!
