As the name suggests, It's based on a virus which spreads and becomes a Pandemic around the world. This is amazing to see currently during the time of COVID to know more things about it.

If you are a germaphobe or a squeamish person, I will say right off the bat that you need to stay away from this movie. This film is an extremely realistic and nearly perfectly paced film about a deadly virus and the results of it. This film boasts an all star cast, all of which do a fantastic job making their characters seem likable and realistic. Not one performance stands out over the other, which is not something that every movie can say.

What director Soderbergh does is give us a feel of just how dangerous this virus is, by focusing on items people are touching, and what happens to the item shortly afterward. He forces the audiences to feel what the characters are feeling and just get a sense of fear and dread as the disease spreads rapidly. As far as the audience is concerned, this isn't a fictionalized story, it is unfolding right before our eyes.

What I really appreciate most about this film is that the film gets us a glimpse at something special. The film outlines how an epidemic like this brings out both the best and the worst in humanity. It really shows humanity in a realistic, and dark light.

This film is very scary, but it's not like the cheap "Friday the 13th" or "Exorcist" horror type scary, but it's scary in the sense that it really makes you think more about what you touch. I remember I was in the theater and I coughed, by accident, and every head turned. This film is on the same level as Jaws in terms of scariness, but whilst in Jaws all you had to do was avoid the beach, you would have to avoid touching things all together.

Is this film for everyone? Like I already said, germaphobes and squeamish people will not enjoy this film. It's a very graphic, realistic and brutal look at a disease epidemic and while to some people that would be interesting, it would make some uncomfortable, and a few people might even be bored at times by it. But I didn't get bored once watching this film. Will the film win any Oscars? Probably not, but if you like films about disease, this is the cream of the crop.

Spread the word...

''It's figuring us out faster than we're figuring it out.''

A thriller centered on the threat posed by a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC to deal with the outbreak.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Beth Emhoff

Steven Soderbergh always captures detail and rapture within his works, whether concerning Che or Traffic or Erin Brockovich, he manages to successfully draw in audiences with a penchant for immersing us in intelligent storylines and using sound and visuals to keep us gripped in a spidery web of tension. His latest effort Contagion is another example of finesse and professionalism in film with a large range at his disposal. Soderbergh knows nothing spreads fear so indifferently and thus is more relevant; A deadly virus spreading on a global scale with researchers and scientists in a race against time to stop it.

The winning factors of Contagion range from a convincing cast, a tense soundtrack and a mechanical, mesmerising cold beat that haunts us, toys with us. Then we have a story which is so close to the truth it has that cringe factor thus forcing us to think twice about touching anything, using public transport, going near the sick, and even makes us fear for our loved ones health.
We have a worldy, unfaithful wife played by Gwyneth Paltrow, a number of doctors played by Kate Winslet, Lawrence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard and we have a seemingly prophetic yet meddlesome journalist played by Jude Law and a greiving father who loses his wife and son played with emotional valor by Matt Damon.

The film has a very realistic, Western glow about it. It explores human nature, human desperation, emotions, attitudes, different personalites and anarchaic chaos let loose when people are given no other alternatives in the face of dying from the virus.
Contagion also shows us animal experimentation, the processes involved to contain such a deadly threat, possible innoculations, new vaccines, the hunt for a cure...
When we see biohazard teams and the bodies piling up 28 Weeks Later begins to come to mind or some of the scenes from V for Vendetta.
Contagion asks us questions and toys with us to makes us ask our own questions: Has this happened already? How would we deal with it? What can protect us from Nature?
The answer is a combination of our ability to react and predict what will happen and to give an appropriate response. Easier said than done.

Steven Soderbergh's Contagion is a race against time and an imagining of a global epedemic transpiring. A deadly indifferent virus which wipes out all regardless of age, race, or gender.
Cleverly the tension, the emotion is captured effortlessly when Matt Damon is checking his wife's camera. Seeing pictures of her, unlike at the Hospital where the realisation of her death is yet to sink in, we come to that point with the camera, and Matt just breaks down. We share his pain and Soderbergh capitalises and tugs on our heart strings with playful poignancy.
Contagion leaves us with a taunting finish concerning the origin of the virus. It makes us consider vegetarianism and to ponder where our food comes from and who is making it for us. Have you washed your hands? I can't stress how important hygiene is and after watching this you will take it more seriously, if you didn't before.

''The average person touches their face three to five times every waking minute. In between that we're touching door knobs, water fountains, and each other.''

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 21 October 2011 11:33

I already saw this movie but since we are right now in the middle of a massive worldwide pandemic with the coronavirus, like many other people, I was really eager to check it out again. Well, like I expected, most of it turned out to be seriously accurate and even pretty scary. Eventually, I think they were only 2 points where they actually did miss the mark. First of all, beside Jude Law’s character using the pandemic to manipulate the stock exchange, they didn’t spend any time on the impact it would have had on the worldwide economy. On the other hand, even if it wasn’t displayed on the screen, you can assume that there was still a collapse of the economy. More problematic was the development of a vaccine. Indeed, even though everything displayed seemed to be technically convincing, the timeline seemed off and still way too rushed. I mean, even with the vaccine for the coronavirus which should be one of the fastest vaccines ever created, it took about a year before they starting developing it until they would finally start to give it to the population. Anyway, after all these years, I still think this movie was a really well made and effective virus thriller which was very well directed with an impressive all-star cast (Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, John Hawkes, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Ehle, Elliott Gould). Furthermore, they chose a more realistic and scientifical approach so there were no shootings, chases, explosions and it was much appreciated. So, the whole thing was interesting and entertaining and I liked it but I can't say it was really mindblowing though. Maybe it had to do with the fact that there were so many characters and story lines and none of them was actually really developed. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent virus thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested Soderbergh's work.

Well I truly got disappointed by the movie as the movie is not upto the expectation and hype created. It could be more powerful, being a powerful plot but the sensation could not be materialized.

How would the human race collectively react to a biological catastrophe?

NOTHING SPREAD LIKE FEAR

This grim thriller follows the rapid progress of a deadly, fast-acting global airborne virus that kills within days, leaving the medical community scrambling to somehow curtail the outbreak, helmed by Oscar-winner director Steven Soderbergh and populated by an all-star cast (including Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow, among many others.

Film may be too intense and/or overwhelming for some given its stark, depictions of death and the somber, sometimes scary exploration of what it's like to live in a constant state of fear.
