The movie combines elements of the genres of comedy, crime, mystery, suspense, thriller and amateur detectives. It is a recognizable tribute to black american cinema and, above all, his admired teacher, Hitchcock. If I'm not mistaken, it is the last movie directed by François Truffaut that I have seen (I realize now I really have to check his other movies...). Coincidentally, this movie was Truffaut's last one and he died a year later of a brain humor. Claude Massoulier is murdered while hunting at the same place as Julien Vercel, an estate agent who knew him and whose fingerprints are found on Massoulier’s car. As the police discover that Marie-Christine Vercel, Julien’s wife, was Massoulier’s mistress, Julien is the prime suspect. But his secretary, Barbara Becker, while not quite convinced he is innocent, defends him and leads her private investigations.
