An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 19 January 2011 02:34

To be honest, it is a rather obscure flick so I had no idea what to expect from it and the main reason I actually watched the damned thing was because there was an interesting cast involved. Eventually, the cast (Romola Garai, Rose Byrne, Bill Nighy,Tara Fitzgerald, Henry Cavill) was indeed pretty good but I have to admit that I didn't care much about the story. Basically, it was one of those supposedly quirky romantic-comedies filled up with some rather excentric characters and even though it was all supposed to be charming and all, I can't say it really impressed me. To make the proceedings even more underwhelming, it was also a periode piece so the makers could explain the odd behavior of the characters with the fact that, back in those days, it was entirely plausible that they would act this way. Still, ย the directing was decent and the actors did manage to lift up this material so it was still a decent watch after all. Concerning Romola Garai, it is a shame she never really managed to really have a break-through because she really had some potential which was pretty obvious in this movie. To conclude, it is not really surprising that the whole thing is so obcure but I guess it is still worth a look, especially if you like the genre.ย

I Capture the Castle review

Posted : 13 years, 8 months ago on 20 July 2010 11:05

this movie was adapted from a book by dodie smith that i read about 1965. the movie has romola garai as cassandra mortmain--the family mortmain are challenged to maintain a proper household that includes father--james who writes, but has a tough time finding an isolated work place and often gets writers block. the other family members are rose byrne as rose and tara fitzgerald as topaz. the story which takes place in a crumbling castle in suffolk is filtered through the eyes of cassandra the younger of the two daughters. her older sister rose is hoping to soon find a proper man and her chance arrives with simon and neil cotton played by henry thomas and marc blucas. the cottons have plans to live in the castle. the remaining member of the mortmain family is topaz who is james' second wife-- i honestly don't remember a great number of details-- the cast is good and the family is poor-- i know a lot of interesting things occur.--the filmmakers certainly wouldn't bother with a book that age if it didn't seem a good story--rose byrne is up and coming now, as are romola garai and tara fitzgerald. BTW dodie smith also wrote 101 dalmations--if you watch this and enjoy it--let us all know -I intend to try and secure a copy on dvd-

Charming romantic comedy

The book (by Dodie Smith) is better. It's usually so, as it has the space to develop the characters, set the setting (as it were) and be more satisfying.

But the movie for me ranks 8/10. Adaptations are always difficult, but here an harmonious compromise has been reached.

The acting is not uniformly good, but each performer gives the best of itself. Particularly Tara Fitzgerald, Romola Garai, Henry Thomas and, yes, Marc Blucas(if you've only seen him on 'Buffy' you're in for a treat).

All in all a wonderful, old-fashioned with the odd touch of XXIst century romantic comedy.
