Breaking the Waves is a 1996 film directed by Lars von Trier and starring Emily Watson. Set in the Scottish Highlands in the early 1970s, it tells the story of an unusual young woman, Bess McNeill, and of the love she has for Jan, her husband. The film is an international co-production led by Lars von Trier's Danish company Zentropa.

Lars von Trier is one of those directors which one I find interesting without really enjoying their work. This movie is a perfect example. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure it was the first movie directed by von Trier which I have seen but, to be honest, I didn’t like it much. Indeed, when it was released, it was universally heralded so I had some pretty huge expectations but I thought it w... read more

Description: Drama set in a repressed, deeply religious community in the north of Scotland, where a naive young woman named Bess McNeil (Emily Watson) meets and falls in love with Danish oil-rig worker Jan (Stellan Skarsgaard). Bess and Jan are deeply in love but, when Jan returns to his rig, Bess prays to God that he returns for good. Jan does return, his neck broken in an accident aboard the rig. Because of his condition, Jan and Bess are now unable to enjoy a sexual relationship and Jan urges Bess to take another lover and tell him the details. As Bess becomes more and more deviant in her sexual behaviour, the more she comes to believe th ... (more)

A Complete Review of Lars von Trier's work (16 movies items)

" Cast : Emily Watson, Stellan Skarsgård, Katrin Cartlidge, Jean-Marc Barr, Udo Kier What was it about? Oilman Jan is paralyzed in an accident. His wife, who prayed for his return, feels guilty; even more, when Jan urges her to have sex with another. My two cents: I’m pretty sure it was the first movie directed by von Trier which I have seen but, to be honest, I didn’t like it much. Indeed, when it was released, it was universally heralded so I had some pretty huge expectations but I th"

"March 13th Directed by: Lars von Trier There's a lot to think about here, as there usually is with von Trier. One woman's madness and devotion, her faith is tried by the reality that her world is ruled by men. Maybe I'm getting this wrong but it seems to encourage the protagonist's strange promiscuity, likening Christianity's stranglehold on sexuality to not allowing women to speak in church. Of course, there's a lot more to discuss with how the film ends, but I'll hold my tongue. Breaking the"
