Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan review

Posted : 3 years, 9 months ago on 3 July 2020 04:04

I rarely leave negative reviews. There are enough critics in the world. But this movie holds a special place ...
As, by far, my most disliked and worst movie I have ever sat through. There was one funny scene (in the elevator) and the best after that was boring. The majority of the movie wasn't stupidly offensive, it was just offensive. It did not even rise to level of stupid.
Really really hated this movie. Worst ever.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan review

Posted : 5 years, 1 month ago on 11 March 2019 08:03

Funny, Awkward, Vile and Offensive.

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 24 September 2014 11:14

Borat is the first "Mockumentary" I've seen, i wasn't familiar with the genre, in fact, i think nobody did, my first viewing was maybe in 2009 and this is my second viewing, i'm also not familiar with Sacha Baron, I've seen few interviews by Ali G on YouTube, and i thought it was hilarious, in HUGO he wasn't the same as in Borat, but this is definitely a weird viewing experience, because it was funny, awkward, offensive and vile, all at the same time.

The idea is very original, as it obvious from the title, Borat travels to the United states to learn their culture so maybe he can pass that to his country Kazakhstan, and in the way, he film actual reactions by actual people, although few scenes where not real, like the Pamela Anderson scene, but in general, the scenes where real, which makes it very different from the comedies we watch usually, but that was the point.

Sacha Baron plays the character very well, the look and the thick English accent convinced people that he was real which was the most important part, because with a camera pointed at people, the possibility of this being a prank was high, but his performance convinced them otherwise, in most cases, the movie was really funny, some scenes were really awkward, like the fact that he kissed every guy he met, that feminist meeting was very awkward, but that was the point, to laugh in a awkward matter, some scenes were vile and disgusting, like that nude fight, or at the end of the "sophisticated dinner" scene before they call the police on him and kick him out, but the movie achieved every scene successfully, everything was on the spot.

I do think that the movie was to be comedy and was also to expose, because with that real reactions, so much can be learned here, it showed Americans as being respective to cultures, and they were trying to help him as they can, it showed friendly people, although a lot of men were offended by Borat kissing them, but most of them took it friendly, it showed sexism, those three drunk guys in the van, although, i don't like to judge them because they were drunk and almost wasted, and they only represent themselves, but i do think that national anthem scene was offensive, not singing the national anthem, but that interview done before it, a cowboy guy telling Borat that he should shave his mustache because "he look like a Muslim", and he have seen so many Muslim carrying Bombs, it shows so much ignorance, but let also not judge that person because he was one guy only, what was more offensive, was the crowed cheering for Borat line, "May George Bush drink the blood of every man, woman, and child in Iraq!", that was absolutely disgusting and terrifying to see something like that, but i don't blame the movie for showing that scene, it's a golden footage, exposing what people really thinks, they may not be all people in that town, but there were a lot of people.

Overall, i think it was funny, sometimes more awkward than funny, vile and offensive, however i strongly disagree with the way the movie handle it's participants off-screen, those "Kazakhstan village people", were actually Romanians who have no idea what was going on and were paid dimes for it, that driving instructor had no idea what he was in for, even though telling him won't change his reaction, i do think that all those people should have been informed about it after filming, not lying to them and keeping them completely in the dark, because if they were paid and informed after recording the scenes, none of them would file a lawsuit against this movie, and i do think that it was offensive to Kazakhstan, so after all, it was like telling an offensive joke just to make people laugh, and it did succeed in both.

Underrated and hilarious

Posted : 10 years, 6 months ago on 5 October 2013 05:01

Since I keep hearing that 'Borat' is absolutely hilarious, I was desperate to check it out and watched it

It is incredibly rude, filthy and offensive but also incredibly funny at the same time, my favorite part is when Borat finishes his bath and he finds Azamat naked and they go into a fight which includes doing filthy, rude, hilarious things to each other

Sacha Baron Cohen is pretty good in it and Borat's voice is hilarious

To conclude, the movie is filthy, rude, offensive, hilarious, hilarious, hilarious, hilarious, hilarious and a must-see for any movie lover

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan review

Posted : 11 years, 2 months ago on 4 February 2013 10:04

Not going to lie. Thought it was going to be much more worse that it actually was. It was fairly entertaining in parts. Not necessarily 'funny' just sometimes interesting to watch. It also was really weird that Kazakhstan was chosen, I mean, what an obscure country. You can't stereotype it, so why choose it? I do wonder...

The parts I liked of this film were that fat man and him running around the hotels, I thought that was pretty funny. You get many stuck-up snobs in posh hotels, and to shock them like that, well, it was funny. Though I'm sure it was staged...come on. There's no proof, but it's sort of obvious. I hope it wasn't, anyway.

I didn't really like the whole 'Pamela Anderson' thing...kinda boring. As was the 'sex' jokes. Containing vulgarity up to sky-high. I really felt ill after that, but as long as a film has some redeeming aspects, then I can forgive.

Overall, though I didn't think it was all that 'bad', I still didn't think it was brilliant, really. But, I'm sure this is better than Bruno and The Dictator. By a long shot, I'm sure...

A hilarious movie

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 30 January 2011 01:34

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since it was available on Disney+, ago, I was quite eager to check it out again. I remember it very well though, back then, when it came out, it was a huge success which was quite surprising. Eventually, I didn't expect the damned thing to be so hilarious... In my opinion, it is easily one of the best comedies from the last 20 years, even probably the best one, period. The best thing about this flick was that Sacha Baron Cohen managed to create a character who was obviously rather stupid and despicable but, in a weird way, after a while you can't help feeling sympathy for him... And quite often, that was the other great asset in this movie, the 'real' people around Borat were even funnier and more despicable than Borat himself. Many people think it is a comedy based on a stupid character with some stupid jokes, but I think they are wrong, I think it is actually some very smart humor. Like the Tramp who wasn't really bright created by Charlie Chaplin, Sacha Baron Cohen has created something really intriguing here. Of course, instead of poetry, you have vulgarity but, in both cases, you are dealing with a simple minded character but it is still smart comedy, at least, that's what I think. It's too bad that Cohen's following features ('The Dictator' and 'Bruno') weren't that good though. Eventually, 14 years later, Sacha Baron Cohen would come up with a sequel which didn't make many waves and, even though I really wanted to, I didn't manage to watch the damned thing yet because I don't have Amazon Prime which is a pain in the *ss. Anyway, coming back on our main feature, to conclude, I really loved this hilarious comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Borat Review

Posted : 16 years, 4 months ago on 2 December 2007 11:18

Not as funny as I thought it would be, actually I found it to be a bit drawn out, but there were still some scenes that were, well not quite but more or less, bordering on hilarious. It is one of those movies where you really need a sense of humour, be very open minded and not mind a bit of stupidity (and a fair bit of nudity) to watch it without being offended.
So basically if you aren't open minded then there's no need to watch this because it is crude. Don't even bother contemplating it.

Hello my name a borat i come from a Kazakhstan.
High Five!

This movie is freaking hillarious! Buut you have to see it to believe it!
Borat was waaaaaaay better than Ali G in my oppinion. Sacha Baron Cohen Is the funniest ever though!

I can't get his voice out of my head.
There are so many funny parts in this movie, too many to mention,,
There is only one thing to critisise about this movie. Two Naked men wrestling is not entertaining. Apart from that, genious!

'What's up with it, Vanilla face? Me and my homie Azamat just parked our slab outside. We're looking for somewhere to post up our Black asses for the night. So, uh, bang bang, skeet skeet, nigga. Just a couple of pimps, no hos.'

Worse than I thought it would be

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 29 May 2007 04:41

This movie is absolutely horrible. My wife has been wanting me to watch it for her since it was in the movie theatre, and I have continually been saying that I would hate the movie. I don't like seeing other people ridiculed, made fun of, or embarrassed, and this movie contained plenty of this. I don't care if "Borat" was making a statement about the hyprocrisy of modern American life or not, this movie only made me want to leave. I did watch the entire movie, only leaving twice when I couldn't watch certain scenes. I was unable to watch when Borat brought the prostitute to his high society dinner, and I refused to watch Borat at the revival meeting. This movie should not be watched.

Just drags on and on

At the beginning, it's very funny. Hilariously funny. But eventually the same joke over and over gets tiring. Maybe I'll finishing watching it... maybe not...
