Nothing really happens

On one level this film is slow moving and uneventful. However, this is a story stripped to its basic framework. The narration provides minimal information to the understanding of the story (You could watch without subtitles and still get the idea).

It is this stark minimalistic style that distills the story to its basic essence. This is the classical representation of Old Bull vs Y... read more

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie and the main reason why I wanted to check it out was because it was included in the '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' list. Well, to be honest, my first reaction was that it seemed to be yet another really obscure entry that could be easily removed from this list but, eventually, the more I thought about it, the more I had to admit that i... read more

Miika's Movie Diary - 2019 (137 movies items)

"29.8. Muukalaislegioonan isomman herran ja uuden tulokkaan välisen kilpailun ja kateuden kuvaamisessa visuaalisuus on Beau Travailissa tärkeämmässä osassa kuin dialogi. Elokuva luo kauniin kuvaston, pitkälti elekieleen pohjautuvan näyttelyn ja verkkaisen etenemisen avulla hieman unenomaisen tunnelman ja tavallaan filmin kateusteemalle kehikon, jonka sisällä aihetta on helppo tarkastella. Lopun tanssikohtaus The Rhythm of the Nightin soidessa taustalla on kirsikkana kakun päällä mit"

A good movie

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie and the main reason why I wanted to check it out was because it was included in the '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' list. Well, to be honest, my first reaction was that it seemed to be yet another really obscure entry that could be easily removed from this list but, eventually, the more I thought about it, the more I had to admit that it was actually quite intriging. First of all, Claire Denis has never been known to make some easy movies but it was by far her most difficult directing effort, at least, among her movies I have seen so far. Indeed, it was a poetic and really minimalistic feature, with no plot and barely any dialogue whatsoever and instead some rather obscure voice-over by Denis Lavant. So, what was it about?
