Balls of Fury review

Posted : 9 years, 8 months ago on 14 August 2014 02:53

The movie is called Balls of Fury and is a spoof of martial arts movies...it is also a homage to the sport known as table tennis/ping-pong.

It revolves around our main protagonist Randy Daytona who is portrayed by Dan Fogler, he is introduced to us via a dove and is a down on his luck former ping pong olympic champion.

He is brought in by an FBI agent named Rodriguez (George Lopez ) to help track down the man who killed his father.

But in order for that to happen he is trained by Master Wong (James Hong) and his niece the super attractive Maggie (played by Maggie Q).

Which is also where we get to see some extremely well executed ping pong matches including one against a little girl - and this little girl is nicknamed "The Dragon".

Yes, the majority of gags involve stereotypes and shots to the family jewels and such but they're still funny.

They arrive in China in which they meet our resident Big Bad....who is a Chinese ping-pong master/warlord named Feng. Played by none other than Christopher Walken. And I have to say he really did impress me here.

He's proven time after time again that he's great at making fun of himself and the fact that he's known for playing bad guys and this is no acception. He's brilliant here and the costumes he wears are beautiful.

My particular favorite has to be the one he wears during the ping pong match against Randy..it reminds me of a bit of the outfit MJ wore during the History period (like one of the covers of the History I and II dvds) and also because of the black armour - a lot of the Hessian as well.

Without spoiling too much for you....I can say that this movie is without a doubt one of the funniest movies I have ever seen, it's got quite an awesome soundtrack too.

The cast is superb, I found Dan Fogler to be very likable and also almost like Jack Black in some sense - because Randy does share similarities to some of Jack Black's film roles. I liked George Lopez, he was pretty good.

Maggie Q...wow! She was amazing and attractive. As was Alisha Taylor.

But to me..the highlight was Christopher Walken as Feng. How can you NOT like Walken? That man is incredible.

And everything Walken says is infectious. Because sometimes you might find yourselves getting the urge to actually say them. *his voice gets lower and more Walken-like* I've gotta have more cowbell! The ICE IS GONNNA BREAK! Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream...oh crap, it's happening again.

For those fans out there who love to hear the more musical side of Walken, you can hear him sing during the End credits performance of "Pour Some Sugar On Me."

This movie is hillarious and I heavily suggest watch this...there are lots of great cameos too like Patton Oswald, Robert Patrick (for those who don't know Robert was the original Terminator in the first movie of said series.), Terry Crews (who is also now in The Expendables I and II), Diedrick Bader (if you're an animation fan you might know him as the voice of Batman in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, as well as numerous other cartoons - including Hoss Delgado in the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy), Thomas Lennon (who also produces this movie as well) and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.

Cary played the role of one of the gorilla guards in Planet of the Apes but one of his more noteworthy roles was Shang Tsung in the live action Mortal Kombat movie. Yes! Shang Tsung is in this movie.

The humor was quite good, nothing too crude it was all really enjoyable and i'm glad I had the chance to watch it.

Furious fun, or just plain balls?

*There are spoilers in this review.*

Balls of Fury is a 2007 film about the former greatest ping pong player in the world, Randy Daytona, who is sent on a mission to stop the evil Feng's tournament to the death.

From a movie called "Balls of Fury", I can't say that this movie being bad is a disappointment because its core concept is lackluster while the film being as bad as you would expect. This is the same main problem other film failures like It's Pat and Accepted had (though I'll have to save up my feelings for those movies for their respective reviews): a wacky premise followed by a couple of sub-plots stumbling around the movie in a vain attempt to try to make the movie taken more seriously. However, this movie is called "Balls of Fury", I think any people who wanted a serious sports movie have exited the theater ten minutes in.

Often times, the ridiculous main plot, which focuses more on comedy, and the two subplots, which focus more on action and romance, intertwine with each other and it just becomes both over-dramatic and unfunny at the same time, though each plot still fails to achieve comedy, romance or action all on their own. For example, the finals match to the death with Randy Daytona against his love interest. Randy doesn't want her to die, so he throws the match by making it so she hits the ball unintentionally and Randy doesn't hit it back. However, this is both played for laughs and being taken seriously, resulting in the audience being confused whether to laugh, cry, or stare in awe at the scene before them, and the audience ends up painfully bored.

Many of the jokes in this movie, while not being offensive, miss far too much and are just very lowbrow. Balls of Fury just tries to appeal specifically to teenage audiences, what with gay jokes and the constant stream of "Oh Crap!"s in the dialogue, but any teenager with an I.Q. of over 30 will get very bored of this movie's ridiculous premise very fast.

Randy Daytona is supposed to make the target empathize with him, because the target audience would know how he feels. Instead he comes off as an unfunny frat-boy with an annoyingly loud voice. Christopher Walken and George Lopez did surprisingly good jobs with their acting as Feng and Rodriguez, respectively, but just two people with good acting isn't worth the price of the DVD.

Unless you really like sports movies, action, and romance in one movie, I'm not guaranteeing that you will enjoy this movie. There are so many other better sports movies out there, and I recommend you watch those instead.

A very average movie

Obviously, I didnโ€™t expect much from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Christopher Walken, I thought I might as well give it a try. So, before watching the damned thing, I knew already that it would be kind of lame but it was even worse than I expected. In my opinion, the whole concept actually had some potential but it was just really poorly developed in my opinion. It seems that the makers decided that to make a parody of sport movies dealing with ping pong was already hilarious on its own. Well, it sounded pretty stupid and they managed to give a rather stupid movie. Another issue was also to give the lead part to Dan Fogler. I mean, sure, the guy can be a decent sidekick but he definitely doesnโ€™t have the shoulders to carry a movie like this one. I have to admit it, it was nice to have the really charming Maggie Q but neither she or Christopher Walken could save this mess. To conclude, even though I have seen worse, I thought the whole thing was rather underwhelming and I donโ€™t think it is really worth a look.

The movie was alright. Nothing special if you ask me. There are a few hilarious moments but most of it is slapstick.

Watched it only because of Walken in the cast. Funny, just for time waisting. Remembered myself plaing tennis and realized that would be happy to do more.

Balls of Fury

Posted : 16 years ago on 9 April 2008 11:54

Balls of Fury came across to me as the average 'comedy' these days, delivering very few laughs and a pretty crappy dialogue. I admit at times it was fun to watch, but to me it seemed a lot like a spoof rather than actually an original movie.

The idea of basing a movie about ping pong is a clever one though, and I think it'd be safe to say that it's the first real ping pong movie. I'm just disappointed that it didn't turn out as good as it could have been; even though I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, I feel as though this could have been turned into something far better. The plot was unexplainable.. it kept the sequence right, but I was left wondering how the heck it even started out and how it got to a certain point in the movie. As I have said, the dialogue was just absurd and quite meaningless. I noticed a lot of incidences where a certain line was supposed to be hilarious, but ended up being something that I'd be puzzled by and wondering why it could be considered entertaining. It would have been interesting seeing it in the cinema to see if anyone thought parts were stupid.. or it was just me.

Dan Fogler was mildly entertaining, but compared to others.. you could say that he gave a pretty good performance as the lead character. Christopher Walken wasn't too bad, I guess he was what I'd expect from him in a flick like this. Maggie Q was neither exceptional or completely unbearable... she was just sort of... there. Her lines meant almost nothing coming out of her mouth, so most of the time she was ignorable. I'm still trying to work out if that's such a bad thing.

Overall Balls of Fury wasn't nearly as entertaining as the good comedy movies out there, but considering the stuff that people are coming out with these days... it could be thought of as average.

gets a bit lengthy towards the end, but still very entertaining. Nonsense, though!
